A BLOCKBUSTER trade deal between the UK and US was only possible “because of Brexit”, Donald Trump has declared.
The US President hailed Brexit as the key that unlocked the deal, saying it “only happened because Britain took back control of its trade policy.”
In a glowing tribute to the UK, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office: “This was separate because of Brexit in particular. It always seemed so natural. This deal just fell into place.”
President Trump praised Britain as “truly one of our great allies” and took a swipe at the European Union, branding it “extremely unfair” in its past dealings with the United States.
He revealed the EU is now scrabbling to strike its own trade pact with Washington – but insisted the UK got in first, thanks to breaking free from Brussels’ grip.
The comments will be seen as a major endorsement of Brexit and the UK’s new global role outside the bloc.
It comes as final details of the US-UK trade agreement are being thrashed out, with both sides hailing it as a “win-win” for workers, businesses and consumers. Details to follow.
Trump’s words also mark a thaw in transatlantic relations, after years of frosty ties during Brexit talks and rows with the EU over tariffs and trade.
A government insider said: “It’s clear the special relationship is alive and well – and Britain is back on the world stage.”
So much for Obama saying the UK would be at the “back of the queue”.
