In a breathtaking display of power, precision, and pride, operational aircraft from across the Royal Air Force will thunder through the skies above Buckingham Palace today as part of the national celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

At precisely 13:45 — weather and operational commitments permitting — 23 aircraft will soar over the capital, saluting the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who secured peace in Europe eight decades ago. The flypast promises to be a stirring tribute to history and heritage, featuring an awe-inspiring line-up from today’s front-line fleet alongside historic icons from Britain’s wartime skies.

Modern marvels such as the Typhoon, A400M Atlas, C-17 Globemaster, Rivet Joint, and Poseidon will join the aerial procession, showcasing the strength and capability of the contemporary RAF. At the heart of the spectacle will be the legendary Red Arrows, Britain’s world-renowned aerobatic display team, painting the sky in patriotic pride. Complementing them will be the unmistakable silhouette and evocative sound of the Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight — a poignant symbol of Britain’s wartime resilience.

Leading the coordination of this historic operation is Air Vice-Marshal Mark Jackson, Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group and the Senior Responsible Officer for the flypast. Speaking from the ground during the final preparations, he remarked:

“I was reviewing the flypast from a safety and execution perspective, ensuring the timings, spacings, and overall structure were on track for the special VE Day 80 celebrations. It’s a great honour to be part of the events to remember those who served our nation 80 years ago.”

Equally proud is Wing Commander Andrew Watson, Officer Commanding No. 12 Squadron and Mission Commander for the flypast. Reflecting on last week’s rehearsals, he said:

“We are very proud to be able to show the nation and His Majesty The King, our Commander-in-Chief, on this historic occasion, our capability and present that as a fitting and appropriate tribute for the millions of people who served in the Second World War. It should be a good spectacle for the nation and the Commonwealth.”

The skies will be only part of the pageantry. Earlier in the day, over 1,300 personnel from the UK Armed Forces, uniformed services, and youth organisations will take part in a military procession through the heart of the capital, reinforcing the message of remembrance, service, and national unity.

As the engines roar above Buckingham Palace, all eyes will turn skyward in collective tribute — a proud nation pausing to remember, to reflect, and to celebrate the freedom secured by the bravery of a generation.
