Thousands gathered today to welcome Prince William and Kate Middleton to Birmingham.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were in the city to speak with future leaders in Birmingham’s creative industries but still found time to visit some independent businesses and have some fun.

Whilst visiting a family run independent Indian restaurant based in the city centre, the future king picked up the phone to a customer wishing to book a table.

According to a bystander he was heard saying “Maybe half two? Half past two? In about an hour for two people?” as Kate burst into fits of giggles beside him.

The Prince and Princess then spent time with the owners of the restaurant, the Sharma family and their staff before meeting former students from University College Birmingham who trained at the restaurant.

Their Royal Highnesses then moved to the kitchen where they met the team of chefs and tried their hand at making a handmade roti, a simple flatbread often served with cooked vegetables and curries.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were then seen having fun with This Morning presenter, Alison Hammond as they hosted future leaders and local business owners from Birmingham’s creative industries sector at an event in The Rectory.

The Royal couple posed for selfies with Brummie born Alison Hammond who then posted on Instagram: “These two are Everything!! @princeandprincessofwales Thanks for popping by in Birmingham. Next time dinner at my place!” Picture by Andrew Parsons / Kensington Palace

The Prince and Princess met representatives of the creative industries sector, including designers, artists, and playwrights and heard more about how the sector is growing and their experiences of opening and running their businesses in the city.

Annie James who was at the event told the Conservative Post:

“Kate thanked me for coming and said Birmingham looked beautiful in the sunshine. They were both really smiley. It was amazing to see them. The monarchy is in safe hands with those two.. they are a credit to us all. It’s been a really special day.”

Their Royal Highnesses then joined the guests for a game of interactive darts downstairs in the 180 Club.
