Today (8 March) is International Women’s Day, an annual event that celebrates and recognises the achievements of women across the world.
This year the theme is #EmbraceEquity.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on the 8th of March, and, according to the IWD website, has three broad aims: “Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity.”
Luckily here in Britain, women’s rights are among the best in the world. Women are championed in every area of British life, from making us proud on the sports field and winning International competitions to being on the world stage and leading our country in the Houses of Parliament. In business too the UK has climbed to second in the international rankings for women’s representation on boards at FTSE 100 level. Nearly 40% of UK FTSE 100 board positions are now held by women, compared with 12.5% just 10 years ago.
In every corner of British life women are represented and celebrated for their achievements.
However, across the world this is often not the case. Women regularly suffer bias, stereotypes and discrimination especially in poorer countries where many are often refused an education and forced to live terrible lives.
Each of us has the potential to transform the lives of women and girls living on less than $5 a day.

The Global Innovation Fund believes women and girls must be the protagonists in their own lives. Working with the UK, Canadian and Swedish governments, they have built a portfolio of innovations which is set to increase the agency of up to 12.8 million women and girls in the next ten years.
