In a major scientific breakthrough, Our Future Health has officially become the world’s largest health research programme of its kind, with over a million people from across the UK signing up to help tackle the most common and devastating diseases of our time.
Launched with funding from UK Research and Innovation’s Accelerating Detection of Disease Challenge and supported by Innovate UK, this extraordinary initiative is a collaborative effort between the public sector, life sciences companies, and leading UK health charities.
Its mission? To revolutionise the way we prevent, detect, and treat life-altering conditions like dementia, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
The programme has set an ambitious goal of recruiting up to five million volunteers, aiming to create the most comprehensive health database ever seen. This research will give scientists an unparalleled insight into the factors that influence our health, including genetics, lifestyle, family history, and personal medical records.
But the real game-changer is the diversity of participants. For the first time, a health research programme includes a representative cross-section of the UK population, with a focus on under-represented groups—making this a resource that will benefit everyone and help tackle health inequalities that have plagued society for decades.
Dr Raghib Ali OBE, CEO of Our Future Health, said:
“We can now proudly say that Our Future Health is the world’s largest health research programme of its kind. Our volunteers’ data is creating a transformative scientific resource that will fuel health discoveries for years to come, helping people live longer, healthier lives.”
With one million participants already on board, researchers will be able to study the genetic data of an enormous group of people, analysing how it interacts with everything from lifestyle to family history. This will be critical in understanding the root causes of diseases and, crucially, how to prevent them.
What sets this programme apart is the ability to re-contact volunteers to take part in follow-up studies—allowing researchers to continuously improve their understanding of health over time.
Dr Stella Peace, Interim Executive Chair of Innovate UK, hailed the milestone as a huge step forward for the UK:
“Reaching one million full participants is a significant achievement. This programme will open up endless opportunities for researchers across academia, industry, and charities, driving innovation that will improve lives and promote business growth.”
Our Future Health is already making waves in the medical community, and with backing from the UK government, charities, and private industry, it is set to shape the future of healthcare on a global scale.
How You Can Get Involved
The programme is rolling out region by region across the UK, inviting residents who live near clinics to participate. But anyone over the age of 18 can sign up online via the Our Future Health website, where you’ll fill out a health questionnaire and book a clinic appointment.
At the clinic, volunteers will provide a blood sample and undergo basic physical measurements. In return, participants get a glimpse into their own health and contribute to a project that could transform the future of medicine.
For those not near a current clinic, you can register your interest online and be notified when new locations are added.
