Weston crowns golden week with European title as British Skeleton sweep medals in St Moritz

Matt Weston completed a remarkable hat-trick in St Moritz as he added the European Skeleton title to his World crown, leading a superb British medal haul that also delivered silver and bronze across a thrilling day of racing.

The British Skeleton star claimed his third gold medal in as many days at the penultimate IBSF World Cup of the season, an event that also doubled as the European Championships and served as a major marker on the road to the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Weston, who trains at the University of Bath, followed up his commanding victory in Wednesday’s rearranged World Cup race on the same track with another dominant display. His combined time of 2:16.58 left him almost a second clear of the rest of the field, underlining his authority on the iconic Swiss track.

The result secured Weston his fifth World Cup gold from six races this season and a second European title of his career. Crucially, it means he will head into next month’s Olympics as both the reigning World Champion and European Champion — a powerful statement of British strength in the sport.

Behind him, fellow Brit Marcus Wyatt, the 2024 European Champion, finished ninth overall and sixth among the European contenders. Jacob Salisbury continued his upward trajectory with a season-best World Cup placing of 13th, which translated into ninth in the European standings.

British success was not confined to the men’s race. In the women’s competition, Tabby Stoecker delivered two composed and consistent runs to finish fourth overall in a time of 1:10.92, earning continental silver behind Belgium’s Kim Meylemans. Amelia Coltman and Freya Tarbit placed 10th and 12th respectively, finishing sixth and seventh in the European classification.

The medals kept coming in the mixed team event later in the day. Salisbury and Tarbit combined to secure European bronze, edging compatriots Wyatt and Coltman off the podium by just one-hundredth of a second in a dramatic finish. Although the British pairings finished fourth and fifth in the overall World Cup standings, both teams moved up one place in the European rankings.

World Cup and European Championship action continues over the weekend with the bobsleigh events, as British athletes look to build further momentum ahead of the Olympic year.

The British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association (BBSA) is based at the University of Bath, a UK Sport-accredited Elite Training Centre. Athletes carry out their home training on the UK’s only outdoor push-start track, as well as using the gym and indoor sprint track at the Sports Training Village, facilities that continue to underpin Britain’s growing success on the world stage.
