Nadhim Zahawi has announced his decision to step down as a Conservative MP in the upcoming election.
The former Chancellor has represented the seat of Stratford-on-Avon since 2010 and has become the latest in a growing number of senior Conservative MPs to announce they will be stepping aside at the next election, including Dominic Saab, Kwasi Kwarteng and Theresa May.
In a statement Mr Zahawi said he believes it’s time for a new, dynamic Conservative representative to champion Stratford-on-Avon and take on the role of MP for Shakespeare.
His departure marks him as the 64th Conservative MP to confirm they won’t seek re-election, adding to the growing number of departures from the party as the contest approaches.
In a letter shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday morning, Mr. Zahawi cited Shakespeare, saying, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”
He expressed gratitude to his parliamentary staff, colleagues, civil service officials, special advisers, and all who offered him advice, praise, or constructive criticism.
More Conservative MPs are standing down this year than at any point since Labour’s landslide in 1997.
