A new independent evaluation report has showcased the transformative impact of the Babraham Research Campus, a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)-backed hub for cutting-edge research and innovation.

The Babraham Research Campus, one of five BBSRC-supported research and innovation hubs, has been meticulously designed to harness the wealth of world-class scientific expertise in the Cambridge region. Central to this success is its co-location with the Babraham Institute, a BBSRC-funded research institute, and 60 biotech companies. This proximity has fostered an environment where research and industry thrive together, creating a dynamic and symbiotic ecosystem.
Key Findings: A Significant Economic Impact
The evaluation report highlights the campus’s remarkable contributions to both the local Cambridge economy and the broader UK economy. Among the key findings are:
- Annual Economic Contribution: The campus now delivers £538 million annually to the local economy, an 89% increase since 2019.
- Company Valuation: Firms based at Babraham boast a collective valuation of more than £3.15 billion.
- Job Creation: Employment linked to the campus has more than doubled, with 9,400 positions generated, including 2,000 onsite.
- Accelerated Fundraising: Companies at the campus secure funding six months faster than their counterparts elsewhere.
- Collaboration with the Babraham Institute: 75% of campus companies leverage the institute’s world-leading infrastructure, skills, and expertise.

“Companies at Babraham Research Campus are raising 20% more investment six months faster than those based elsewhere, accelerating their discoveries and creating jobs and economic impact for the UK economy. Accelerate@Babraham: A Catalyst for Success
The report also celebrated the achievements of the Accelerate@Babraham programme, a pre-seed funding initiative launched in 2018 to support early-stage life science ventures. The programme has nurtured 26 companies, which collectively have raised £100 million in funding and achieved a combined market value of £139 million. These start-ups have accelerated their fundraising timelines by 12 months and achieved returns of nearly double the initial investment.
