So, picture this: a well-known London steakhouse – Hawksmoor, purveyor of prime cuts and prime sanctimony – decides mid-meal to eject Tommy Robinson and his companions.

Not for criminal conduct. Not for disruptive behaviour. But because some anonymous staff member reported feeling uncomfortable.

A staff member was “uncomfortable” serving them, and the manager cited a “duty of care” to employees. He offered to cover their drinks.

Now, we’re all for staff welfare – no one’s suggesting they serve in shackles. But let’s apply a dollop of common sense here: when you run a restaurant in a free society, the duty of care extends not just to the staff, but to the patrons paying for a quiet dinner without being turned into a political headline.

A man walks into your steakhouse. He orders, he eats, he pays. That should be the end of the story. But no, halfway through the meal, the manager swoops in with apologetic platitudes and a decision to show him and his party the door. Why? Because of vague discomfort. He opted for a Crown Court trial next month. That context may explain the discomfort – but it doesn’t excuse a restaurant acting as judge, jury, and maître d’.

Hawksmoor has shown us something truly unappetising: that dinner can be interrupted not by bad food or bad manners, but by ideological discomfort. That’s not hospitality, that’s censorship with a wine list.
