Despite Linfield’s 1-0 victory against Larne helping the team extend their lead over Glentoran at the top of the NIFL Premiership to 20 points, manager David Healy remains focused on the job at hand, refusing to listen to talk about the championship race being a foregone conclusion.

Healy will know that the three games in hand that Glentoran has could play a massive part in the title race. Linfield have 5 games left of the regular season before the split where they will face another 5 games against the other teams in the top 6. If Glentoran can win their games in hand and cut the lead to 11 points, it could lead to an exciting end to the season.
Healy will be hopeful that Joel Cooper can continue his excellent goalscoring form, netting 16 times so far this season and topping the goalscoring charts alongside Matthew Shevlin of Coleraine and Cliftonville’s Joe Gormley. Another player who could help to secure the results required to sew up the league early is Kieran Offord.
The 20-year-old Scottish striker joined on a permanent transfer from St Mirren after several successful loan moves, including a spell at fellow Belfast side Crusaders where he scored 10 in 21 appearances. Offord got off the mark with the only goal in the game against Larne, earning Healy’s team a crucial 3 points.
Linfield’s remaining 5 games come against Loughgall and Coleraine at home before a trip to Crusaders on March 7th. A home tie against Glenavon follows on the 11th before an away visit to Dungannon Swifts to round off the regular season. The final 5 games of the season will be determined after this with any team down to 10th-placed Glenavon realistically still in with a chance of making the top 6.
Linfield’s impressive run of form dates back to November, with the team now unbeaten in 11 games, and the addition of Offord could help them continue this run. Another important signing who joined on deadline day is fellow Scottish winger Callum Morrison who joined from Falkirk.
The 25-year-old had an impressive strike rate for the Bairns netting 23 times in 32 games last season, finishing as the league’s top goal scorer and earning the Player of the Season accolade.
Morrison started his career at Heart of Midlothian, making 30 appearances over five years and enjoying loan spells at Stirling Albion, Brechin City, and East Fife before joining Falkirk in 2020. 49 goals in 111 league appearances for the cup made him a key player, and Linfield should benefit from his creativity and eye for goal.
While Healy will publicly play down talk of the title, in private he will know that it is Linfield’s to lose. Holding on to key players during the January transfer window and adding two exciting new signings in Offord and Morrison will give the manager and team added confidence as they approach the business end of the season.
