
In a landmark achievement for British defence, the UK’s pioneering DragonFire laser weapon system has successfully shot down high-speed drones during cutting-edge trials in the Hebrides this week, marking the first time a UK-developed laser has tracked, targeted, and destroyed aerial threats beyond the horizon.
The breakthrough comes as the Ministry of Defence awards a £316 million contract to MBDA UK, accelerating delivery of the revolutionary weapon to the Royal Navy by 2027, five years ahead of schedule.
MBDA will partner with QinetiQ and Leonardo to fast-track development through a new, agile procurement model that aims to deliver capability upgrades quickly and continuously.
During the latest round of tests, DragonFire engaged drones travelling at speeds of up to 650 km/h, twice the top speed of a Formula 1 car, showcasing exceptional precision and reliability. The laser is powerful enough to hit a £1 coin from a kilometre away, and costs as little as £10 per shot, offering a transformative and cost-effective alternative to conventional missile interceptors, which are priced in the hundreds of thousands.
The system will be integrated first onto a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer by 2027, providing a major enhancement to the fleet’s layered air-defence shield and reinforcing Britain’s position at the forefront of next-generation military technology.
Beyond strengthening national security, DragonFire represents a significant investment in the UK’s defence industrial base. The programme will support 590 skilled jobs nationwide, including 200 in Scotland, 185 in the South West, and 75 in the East of England, demonstrating the Government’s commitment to ensuring that defence remains a strong engine of economic growth.
In an unprecedented move, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and its industry partners have released never-before-seen declassified footage of the DragonFire Laser Directed Energy Weapon in action over the Hebrides, offering the public a rare glimpse of the future battlespace.
A Vision of Tomorrow’s Fleet Defence
An accompanying animation produced by the MOD illustrates how a future carrier strike group, featuring a Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier and Type 26 frigates equipped with twin DragonFire systems, could counter multiple threats simultaneously.
The scenario shows the carrier group’s radar detecting a wave of incoming dangers, including four sub-sonic UAVs, a supersonic fast-jet threat, and a close-range Fast Incoming Attack Craft, FIAC. As these threats converge, the ship’s layered defence springs into action. A surface-to-air missile intercepts the fast-moving aircraft, while DragonFire locks on to the surface target and neutralises it with precise laser energy.
The animation highlights the Royal Navy’s vision of combining traditional missile systems with advanced directed-energy weapons, creating a powerful, flexible, and cost-effective defensive network for the future fleet.
With DragonFire now moving toward frontline deployment, Britain is not only leading the world in laser-weapon innovation, it is reshaping the future of maritime defence.
