Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock produced one of the great rides of his career on Sunday, storming from the fifth row of the start grid to claim his second elite men’s cross-country mountain bike world title at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy.
A Ride Through the Field
Pidcock, who is a two-time Olympic champion, having triumphed at Tokyo 2020 and defended his title at Paris 2024, was buried in around 32nd position after the opening loop, caught up in traffic on the narrow Italian course alongside fellow multi-discipline star Mathieu van der Poel. From there, the 27-year-old from Leeds began a methodical charge through the field, working his way to the leading group by the midway point of the eight-lap race.
Once at the front, Pidcock launched a decisive attack on the climb at the start of lap six, gradually dropping his rivals one by one. British teammate Charlie Aldridge was the last man able to hold his wheel, but Pidcock pulled clear on the penultimate lap and extended his advantage to the finish, crossing the line in a time of one hour, 25 minutes and 26 seconds.
Aldridge held on for silver, 17 seconds behind, with Canada’s Cole Punchard completing the podium in third.
A Hard Road Back
Pidcock’s victory came just five weeks after he finished ninth overall at the Tour de France, and followed a crash in practice on the Friday before the race that left him racing in pain.
“It was a hard road after the Tour de France to be honest,” Pidcock said afterwards. “I crashed pretty badly in practice on Friday and my back was hurting from the first lap. The last two laps I just had to push and stretch that gap before a final sprint. That was a pretty hard race.”
The result adds to an already remarkable list of achievements for the Yorkshireman, who first won the elite XCO world title in 2023 and has also claimed European cross-country titles in 2022 and 2025.
A Tribute to a Fallen Teammate
Pidcock dedicated the victory to Fin Tarling, the 19-year-old British cyclist who died earlier this month during the Volta a Portugal after a collision with a vehicle that had strayed onto the closed race route. Tarling’s brother, Josh, began the Vuelta a España just days after the tragedy, and both were said to be in Pidcock’s thoughts as he crossed the finish line in Val di Sole.

Mathieu van der Poel, chasing the one rainbow jersey missing from his collection, never recovered from the congested start and finished 30th, 4:44 behind Pidcock.
In the women’s race earlier on Sunday, Switzerland’s Sina Frei won the elite title, with Great Britain’s Evie Richards finishing sixth.
The 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships concluded on Sunday, 30 August, in Val di Sole, Trentino, Italy.
