Britain’s pride soared in Singapore last night as the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay squad delivered a commanding performance to seize the world title, confirming their place at the pinnacle of global swimming.
In a thunderous show of national dominance, Matt Richards, James Guy, Jack McMillan and Duncan Scott reclaimed Britain’s grip on the event, roaring home to gold and silencing any critics on night six of the World Aquatics Championships.
Richards led out with real intent, throwing down a powerful opening leg to set the tone after a tough individual outing earlier in the meet. James Guy then lit up the pool with a composed middle segment, building momentum before unleashing a blistering final 50 metres.
McMillan delivered nerves of steel and textbook control to hold Britain’s advantage under pressure. Then, with Great Britain’s most decorated Olympic swimmer on anchor, there was only ever going to be one outcome.
Duncan Scott surged through the final 200 metres with trademark composure and class, pulling clear in the final stretch to secure Britain’s latest slice of relay history.
“Happy is the right word,” said a beaming James Guy, quick to credit teammates Evan Jones and Tom Dean for their critical role in the morning heats. “To come here to World Championships and win the gold again is very, very special… we had people coming in from different directions… But to hold our own in that kind of environment and to win was very, very nice.”
Scott echoed the sentiment, reflecting on the pressure and unity it took to clinch back-to-back world titles:
“It’s so difficult winning it once – so being able to do it back-to-back, I think we need to be really proud of that. That’s another great swim for us.”
Scott also praised McMillan’s composure under pressure:
“With his 50m to go, I was like, ‘Oh, this is real tight,’ and then he just built so well… which meant that I could really get on the front foot.”
