A deal is being pushed through that will cripple Western nuclear deterrence, empower China, and lay the groundwork for a catastrophic global conflict. This is not alarmism. This is reality.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy are moving to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius. Starmer has already signed the agreement. All that remains is ratification later this year.
If that happens, the West will lose its only strategic, nuclear-capable base in the Indian Ocean: Diego Garcia. The result would be unprecedented danger for Britain, America, and global security.
A 99-Year Illusion
The government claims that the US and UK will retain access to Diego Garcia under a 99-year lease. But what no one in Whitehall, or, it seems, in Washington, is openly acknowledging is this:
Mauritius is a signatory to the Pelindaba Treaty, a binding agreement that makes it illegal for any nuclear weapons to be developed, stationed, or even transited through its territory.
Once the UK transfers sovereignty, Mauritius will have the legal authority to ban nuclear weapons from Diego Garcia, even with a lease in place. That means no nuclear submarines, no long-range bombers, no strategic deterrent. Nothing.
This is not just a diplomatic shift. It is de facto nuclear disarmament, delivered not by protestors or treaties at the UN, but by Britain’s own government.
And do not be fooled when Mauritius says, “You can still use the islands for nuclear weapons.” Once they own the house, they can change the rules whenever they choose. Today it is “pay the rent and carry on.” Tomorrow it is “no nukes, no exceptions.” It is like renting from a landlord who suddenly bans pets. Their house, their rules.
China’s Dream, the West’s Nightmare
Make no mistake, if this deal goes through, China wins. Beijing has long pursued dominance in the Indian Ocean, the maritime artery that connects Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. China has built ports, set debt traps, and invested billions to increase its influence across the region.
Now, it may get something it has never had before: a Diego Garcia stripped of its nuclear role, sitting neutralised in the middle of a region Beijing increasingly views as its own sphere of influence.
Diego Garcia has been the cornerstone of Western military posture in the Indian Ocean since the Cold War. It played a vital role in Iraq, Afghanistan, and continues to serve as a key base for countering Iran and projecting power across the Indo-Pacific.
Without nuclear capability, it becomes a hollow outpost. The West becomes toothless, blind, and boxed in. This is China’s strategic dream and Starmer is delivering it, with Lammy helping seal the deal.
Incompetence, or Something Worse?
We must ask the question: is the Labour government dangerously naïve, or are they willingly paving the way for Chinese expansion?
Why has there been no national security impact assessment published?
Why is Parliament not being fully informed of the risks?
Why has Washington not raised the alarm?
Do American lawmakers truly understand what is unfolding?
The silence is deafening.
Mauritius is no neutral player. It has deep financial ties with China, including major infrastructure deals, soft loans, and a free trade agreement signed in 2019. Beijing’s influence in Port Louis is real and growing. Once Mauritius takes formal sovereignty, it will have the legal right to regulate who enters and what can be deployed, and China’s leverage over that decision is no longer a distant threat. It is an active risk.
They will not need to fire a shot. They will simply point to a treaty.
Washington Must Wake Up — Now
Thanks to the Great British PAC a briefing document has already been delivered to President Trump’s team during his recent trip to Scotland. Another will reach Senator JD Vance this week. Senator Rubio is also being briefed. But time is running out.
If this agreement is ratified before the courts rule on its legality, and before Parliament or Congress fully understand the implications, then the West will have surrendered one of its most important strategic assets in the Indo-Pacific without resistance.
It will be remembered as the moment Britain and America gave up global leverage with the stroke of a pen.

A rising global superpower in China.
An increasingly distracted and divided West.
And the deliberate weakening of nuclear deterrence in one of the world’s most contested regions.

The world must wake up. Congress must act. The American people and the British public must demand answers. Before it is too late.
