It seems Labour’s David Lammy has once again shown a remarkable talent for playing fast and loose with the facts.
Yesterday, in Parliament, Foreign Secretary Lammy boldly declared that the Chagossian people had been informed of the progress of negotiations about the fate of their homeland “all along the way.” Well, I hate to break it to you David, but the Chagossian people themselves have said this is simply not true.
In fact, the Chagossians are adamant they knew nothing about these talks until just an hour before the announcement. Worse still, many found out on social media after the announcement was made.
Lammy’s statement appears to be a blatant attempt to mislead Parliament and downplay the Labour government’s complete failure to properly consult the very people whose future is at stake. This isn’t just a minor oversight—this is a serious breach of trust and an outright falsehood. But is it just another case of Lammy telling porkies again?

Let’s not forget, this is the same David Lammy who once claimed that his mother raised him on tax credits, conveniently overlooking the fact that he was 31 years old when tax credits were introduced! Yes, that’s right—31. You’d think the man would be able to keep his own timeline straight, but then again, David Lammy isn’t very good with timelines, is he?
Who could forget the time he confidently told the BBC that Winston Churchill replaced Neville Chamberlain just days before the Second World War, that Lloyd George replaced Asquith weeks into the Somme, and that Anthony Eden lost his job during the Suez Crisis? Each one of these claims was blatantly wrong. Pretty worrying actually, seeing as we’re supposed to trust this man to navigate our complex international affairs.
But of course pretending the Chagossian people had been informed “all along the way” isn’t an isolated case of Lammy playing fast and loose with the facts. Just recently, Lammy was caught parroting unverified claims from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken about Iran and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Lammy proudly announced that the UK respected the ICJ’s ruling on the illegal occupation of Israel—only for the world to find out that Britain had just abstained from a UN General Assembly resolution that ratified the ICJ’s ruling. In other words, Lammy made a fake claim, just days after the Labour government had said the opposite.
Remember, this is also the man who, in 2022, was found guilty of breaking MP rules for failing to declare financial interests on time. Yes, Mr. Lammy failed to register 16 interests, including tickets to boxing matches and American football games. So much for transparency.
Frankly, if David Lammy can’t even keep his own story straight, how on earth can we trust him with the complexities of our nation’s foreign policy?
And it doesn’t stop there! Who could forget the time he was caught making things up after tweeting that “dozens” of people had jumped from Grenfell Tower during that terrible tragedy? It wasn’t true and only added to the confusion and grief surrounding the event.
Or how about in 2021, when two of his own Labour activists contradicted his claims that they never encountered the transgender issue “on the doorstep”?
Oh, I could go on, but you get the picture… Lammy seems to dig himself deeper with every mistruth.
Frankly, if David Lammy can’t even keep his own story straight, how on earth can we trust him with the complexities of our nation’s foreign policy? In fact, I’d argue he’d be better off staying as far from government as possible.
Although, if we ever need an ambassador to Fantasy Island, well… he’d be a shoo-in.
