The UK’s formidable Carrier Strike Group has embarked on HMS Prince of Wales for Exercise Strike Warrior, marking a major milestone for Britain’s naval power as it prepares for an intensive training exercise.
In a dazzling display of British military might, 809 Squadron and the legendary 617 Squadron—famed as the Dambusters—have deployed with their state-of-the-art F-35B Lightning Fighter Jets.
For the first time, eight of these jets are taking to the skies from the deck of HMS Prince of Wales, making this a significant step in Britain’s air-sea warfare capabilities.
The squadrons are undergoing rigorous training over the coming weeks, with pilots earning their carrier qualifications as they integrate seamlessly with the ship’s crew. The exercise promises to sharpen their skills as they adapt to the unique challenges of operating at sea, while the personnel grow accustomed to the routine at sea and the complexities of operating in a high-intensity maritime environment.
But this is just the beginning. Once the initial phase of training is complete, the operation will shift gears as HMS Prince of Wales is joined by a fleet of escorts and support ships, forming a full Carrier Strike Group. This powerful force will engage in a fortnight-long exercise, honing the UK’s ability to project power globally.
Accompanying HMS Prince of Wales in this striking display of naval force will be the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless, the Type 23 frigates HMS Portland and HMS Iron Duke, and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) tanker Tidespring. These ships will provide vital support and protection to the carrier as the group embarks on complex missions to enhance their combat readiness.
Adding to the formidable line-up is the 815 Naval Air Squadron, equipped with Wildcat helicopters, who will join HMS Dauntless, HMS Portland, and HMS Prince of Wales. These versatile helicopters will play a critical role in anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, and search-and-rescue operations throughout the exercise.
The next few weeks promise to be an intense period of training, as the UK’s Carrier Strike Group sharpens its edge and reaffirms Britain’s status as a global naval power.
