Extended family members seeking to provide long-term, stable care for vulnerable children will be able to access free legal advice, thanks to new government investment announced this week. Under the move, legal aid funding will be extended to more people applying for Special Guardianship Orders through the courts – a form of care which sees a child in need of a loving home placed with extended family, friends or foster parents until they reach the age of 18… click here

The iconic British producer of sports and racing cars, Lotus and British Cycling have confirmed they will continue their hugely successful collaboration in the world of elite track cycling. 16. Wildflower seeds for every primary school class in honour of Coronation
To mark the Coronation all state funded primary schools across the UK will be sent wildflower seeds, inspired by His Majesty The King’s love of nature. The government-funded project was inspired by the King’s love of nature and aims to encourage children to learn about and improve the biodiversity of school’s green spaces, while making them nicer places to work and learn. 15. Millions of Brits to take home more cash as new law on Tipping passes
An estimated £200 million a year will go back into the pockets of hard-working staff by retaining tips that would have otherwise been deducted. Millions of UK workers will take home an estimated £200 million more of their hard-earned cash, as employers are banned from withholding tips under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, which this week received Royal Assent. Many hospitality workers rely on tips to top up their pay and are often left powerless if businesses don’t pass on service charges from customers to their staff… click here

The UK military’s evacuation Joint Task Force has handed over the coordination of evacuation operations at Wadi Seidna airfield to Sudanese authorities, after more than 20 evacuation flights. People living and working in the Lockerbie area in Scotland are to benefit from significantly improved mobile phone connectivity as the first UK government-funded rural mast upgrade is completed. 10. Technology transforms UK’s healthcare with millions of repeat prescriptions now booked through NHS App
More than 500,000 repeat prescriptions are now booked through the NHS App every week. New figures released by NHS England show that since the NHS App’s launch in December 2018, more than 42 million repeat prescriptions have been ordered through the app. Health and Social Care Secretary Steve Barclay said: “Technology is transforming the way we deliver healthcare for patients”… click here

Martyn’s Law progresses as government publishes draft legislation The draft Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill sets out the requirements that, under Martyn’s Law, venues and other organisations will have to meet to ensure public safety. ‘Martyn’s Law’ is a tribute to Martyn Hett who was killed alongside 21 others in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017. 5. 2197 people safely evacuated from Sudan by the UK
The UK has evacuated 2197 people to safety from Sudan, in the longest and largest airlift by any Western nation during the crisis, as the attention now turns to humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. 4. BAE Systems wins huge US Navy support contract
BAE Systems, the major British manufacturer of aircraft, missiles, avionics, and other aerospace and defense products has won a major US Navy C4I support contract. BAE Systems was awarded the contract by U.S. Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, San Diego, to engineer command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) services on surface ships. The total value of the eight-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract is $537 million. 3. Landmark post-Brexit trade deals to come into force this month driving economic growth across the UK
British businesses and consumers will soon be able to reap the benefits of the UK’s first trade deals negotiated from scratch since leaving the European Union with the agreements set to come into force this month.
