British manufacturing giant JCB has reached a monumental milestone, celebrating the production of its one millionth engine – a testament to its global success and innovation.
From three engines a day 20 years ago, JCB now produces around 500 a day, becoming a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of diesel engines and is now pioneering development of hydrogen combustion engines.
The company is now also pioneering the next frontier: hydrogen combustion engines.
‘A Momentous Achievement’
Lord Anthony Bamford, JCB Chairman, expressed his pride in the company’s journey: “To have manufactured one million engines in just 20 years is a remarkable achievement. It’s a significant moment for our teams around the globe. The JCB engine is respected worldwide for its reliability, working tirelessly in extreme conditions from day one. The engine truly is the beating heart of our reputation for durability.”
Reflecting on the decision to produce its own engines, Bamford added: “At the time, it was a bold move, and I was directly involved in that choice. It has truly paid off, and I’m immensely pleased we made that decision. As we celebrate this milestone, it’s fitting to acknowledge the role my late father played in the design of our engines. Although he passed away in 2001, he was deeply involved in the prototypes, and I’m grateful he contributed so significantly to this legacy.”
World Record Breakers: JCB Engines at the Forefront
JCB’s engines have powered record-breaking feats. In 2006, the JCB Dieselmax streamliner, driven by two JCB engines, became the fastest diesel-powered car in the world, clocking an astonishing speed of 350.092mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA – a record that still stands. Not to be outdone, in 2019, JCB’s Fastrac tractor set the world record as the fastest tractor, reaching 135.191 mph, powered by a robust 7.2-litre, 6-cylinder Dieselmax engine.
The Future: Investing in Hydrogen Technology
Looking ahead, JCB is investing £100 million into the development of cutting-edge hydrogen combustion engines. A team of over 150 engineers is dedicated to this project, with more than 120 hydrogen engines already produced. Several machines powered by these efficient engines are currently undergoing rigorous testing, as JCB continues to push the boundaries of green technology.
