The skies above Rome were turned red, white and green yesterday as the Royal Air Force’s legendary Red Arrows joined forces with Italy’s Frecce Tricolori in a breathtaking flypast to mark the State Visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
In a stunning spectacle of skill, precision and patriotic pride, the UK’s elite aerobatic team roared over the Italian capital alongside their counterparts from the Italian Air Force, painting the heavens in the colours of both nations’ flags.
The rare joint display celebrated the enduring Anglo-Italian alliance, underlining the deep diplomatic and defence ties between the two countries.
Crowds lining the streets of Rome – and millions more watching online – were treated to the unforgettable sight of the iconic red Hawk jets of the Red Arrows soaring in perfect formation with the tricolour smoke trails of the Frecce Tricolori.
A Symbol of Unity and Strength
The flypast was more than just a dazzling air display. It served as a powerful symbol of cooperation and shared valuesbetween two key NATO allies.
From military innovation to strategic defence, the UK and Italy are increasingly aligned — notably through projects such as the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), which brings together British, Italian and Japanese forces to develop the next generation of advanced fighter aircraft.
“This joint flypast is a demonstration of the close and historic relationship between our two nations,” an RAF spokesperson said. “It reflects both our shared heritage and our united commitment to a safer, more secure future.”
Excellence on Display
The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, are preparing to kick off their 2025 display season in May, with dozens of airshows scheduled across the UK and mainland Europe.
Based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, the team is made up of fast-jet pilots with extensive operational experience, having flown aircraft such as the Tornado, Typhoon and Harrier. They are supported by more than 100 highly-skilled engineers and ground crew.
Their mission? To showcase the very best of the RAF, to inspire the next generation, and to represent Britain on the world stage.
Their Italian counterparts, the Frecce Tricolori – meaning “Tricolour Arrows” – are equally renowned for their dynamic and elegant displays, and are seen as a national treasure in Italy.
Royal Seal of Approval
King Charles and Queen Camilla, currently on a high-profile State Visit to Italy, were said to be “deeply touched” by the aerial tribute, which capped a day of warm welcomes, formal engagements and cultural celebrations.
The State Visit has been hailed as a chance to “reset and renew” the UK’s relationship with European allies post-Brexit, with Rome offering a particularly warm embrace to Britain’s royals.
As the sound of jet engines faded and the smoke trails dispersed across the Roman sky, the message was clear: Britain and Italy, bound by friendship, heritage and shared ambition, continue to soar — together.
And few images could capture that spirit better than the sight of two great nations, flying side by side.
