Seven start-ups join UK space incubator to tackle industry challenges

Building upon the heritage and space-science excellence of the University of Leicester, Space Park is a collaborative community of industry, academics and students working together to drive growth in space and space-enabled sectors.

Seven British start-ups have been welcomed into a national programme designed to turn space technology into practical solutions for industries ranging from construction to port logistics, in a move officials say could strengthen the UK economy.

The companies have joined the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre UK (ESA BIC UK), which is run by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) alongside the UK Space Agency and the University of Leicester.

The centre gives early stage businesses access to research facilities, technical expertise, funding and business support, with the aim of helping them move from concept to commercial success.

What the new companies are building

Among the new cohort is ViableSite, which is building an artificial intelligence tool that gives a rapid verdict on whether small housing sites are worth developing, a task that has traditionally relied on a slow and expensive web of consultants. The system draws on satellite imagery, planning rules, geospatial information and current market data to weigh up profitability and hidden risks beneath the ground before land changes hands. Every assessment is checked by a chartered architect. The company hopes the approach could bring unused sites into development and eventually be applied to infrastructure projects more broadly.

Nestimate is tackling a related problem in construction, using AI to convert scattered project material, such as tender documents, drawings, scanned files, site photographs and voice recordings, into organised data that can be used to price work quickly. Where information is missing, it fills gaps using satellite data, aiming to help contractors avoid guesswork and protect their profit margins.

Panspectra is working on AI models that analyse satellite observations of the Earth’s surface across different wavelengths and over time, producing what it describes as reliable evidence of physical change. Its first application will focus on verifying deforestation free supply chains, with potential future uses in insurance and infrastructure monitoring.

Two of the new companies are focused on the safety of orbit itself. Spectra Defence Limited is developing an optical imaging technology called Synthetic Aperture LIDAR, which would let small satellites spot and identify objects in orbit with far greater clarity than existing space telescopes, a capability intended to reduce the risk of collisions as space becomes more crowded. Spiral Grey, meanwhile, is building a sensor system named Sapphire that uses laser based ranging to help satellites approach objects that are not designed to be tracked or handled, such as debris, with potential uses in servicing spacecraft, assembling structures in orbit and national security work.

Falcon Tag is applying space data closer to home, creating a live dashboard called Piervue that brings together satellite and logistics information for port operators, with the goal of easing congestion, improving safety and helping supply chains run more smoothly.

Rounding out the group is Infinect, which is developing what it says is the first hybrid flat panel antenna for satellite broadband, intended to bring faster, more reliable internet access to remote areas that are poorly served by conventional infrastructure.

A track record of growth

ESA BIC UK was set up in 2011 as STFC’s first business incubation scheme and now sits within the wider DeepTech Catalyst network, which also supports start-ups in biotechnology, healthcare technology and quantum computing. The Financial Times recently listed the DeepTech Catalyst among Europe’s top hubs for small and medium sized businesses in 2026.

Since 2011, the DeepTech Catalyst says it has backed more than 230 companies, which have together raised over £300 million in private investment, created roughly 1,100 skilled jobs and posted a survival rate of 95 percent. STFC estimates the programme generates around £25 in economic benefit for every £1 of public money invested, and contributes about £150 million a year in value to the UK economy.

The initiative also feeds into the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, which STFC says it supports through its role in economic resilience, regional growth and progress toward net zero.

Paul Vernon, STFC’s Executive Director of Business and Innovation, said space technology was increasingly being used to solve problems well outside the space sector itself, pointing to examples such as easing port congestion and tracking environmental change like flooding and deforestation. He said the incoming companies were turning research into practical tools that could boost productivity and open up new opportunities for growth across the country.

Applications for the next intake of ESA BIC UK are open to UK registered companies that are less than five years old and have a demonstrable connection to the space sector.
