U.S. Authorities have identified the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old former scholarship student from Utah.
Robinson was taken into custody after his father encouraged him to surrender to police, according to law enforcement officials.
The arrest brought an end to a two-day search following the killing, which occurred on Wednesday at Utah Valley University. Kirk, 31, was addressing an audience of roughly 3,000 people during a stop on his American Comeback Tour when a single gunshot struck him in the neck. He died shortly afterward.

Court documents show Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors in Utah County have indicated they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

News of the arrest was made public Friday morning by President Donald Trump during a live interview on Fox & Friends. “I think we have him,” the president said, crediting Robinson’s father and a family acquaintance for their role in alerting authorities.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox later confirmed the arrest at a press briefing in Salt Lake City, telling reporters, “We got him.”

Law enforcement sources told reporters that Robinson had been spotted near the university campus about 30 minutes before the shooting. Surveillance and bystander footage released by the FBI appeared to show a man running across a rooftop and later dropping from a ledge before fleeing into nearby woods.

Robinson, who grew up in Washington, Utah, about 260 miles from the crime scene, previously studied at Utah State University on a scholarship and later attended Dixie Technical College in an electrical apprenticeship program. His father is a retired officer from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and his mother works for a state disability support service.

Kirk’s death has sparked shock and condemnation across the political spectrum. President Trump, a close ally of the conservative activist, ordered flags at federal buildings to be flown at half-mast.
