Keir Starmer has repeatedly insisted the NHS is in a “ghastly state” because of past Tory policies. But this is simply not true.
The real cause of the NHS’s financial woes? Labour’s disastrous Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs), agreed under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, which have left hospitals drowning in debt to this very day.
LABOUR’S PFI NIGHTMARE – THE FACTS THEY WON’T TELL YOU
Labour promised to modernise hospitals, schools, and public services in the late 1990s and 2000s. But instead of using taxpayers’ money wisely, they signed Britain up for a financial time bomb—PFI deals where private companies built and maintained hospitals in exchange for long-term repayments.
And those repayments? They’ve been crippling the NHS ever since.
Even in 2025, many NHS trusts are forced to hand over almost HALF their annual budgets to service this debt. In fact some spend more than 50% of their annual budget just on paying off interest and fees, before a single penny is spent on doctors, nurses, or patient care.
In many cases, the original cost of construction was only a fraction of what hospitals are being forced to repay. Take for example the Barts NHS Trust in London, which signed a £1.1bn PFI deal under Labour – but thanks to outrageous repayment terms, the total cost will be £7bn by the time the deal is paid off!
Hospitals up and down the country are trapped in similar deals, bleeding the NHS dry. The result? Staff shortages, crumbling hospitals, longer waiting times, and patients suffering while billions are siphoned off to private financiers—all thanks to Labour’s reckless financial incompetence.
As revealed in Life Support by Lord Ashcroft and Isabel Oakeshott:
“The single biggest financial burden on some trusts is the payments they must make every quarter for buildings constructed and maintained via so-called private finance initiatives (PFIs)… Almost all struck during the New Labour Years.”
Yet Labour refuses to take responsibility for this disaster.
IT WASN’T JUST THE NHS – LABOUR LOADED DEBT ON OUR SCHOOLS & MILITARY TOO
And it didn’t stop at hospitals. Blair and Brown did the same to our schools and military.
- Hundreds of schools were locked into costly PFI contracts, with headteachers forced to pay thousands just to change a lightbulb or fix a door handle.
- The MoD was signed into long-term rip-off PFI deals, including a military training facility where the taxpayer will pay billions for a site that cost a fraction to build.
It was reckless, short-sighted, and economically devastating—all while Labour pretended they were “investing in Britain”.
Of course, Labour always claim that PFIs were originally a Tory idea—and technically, they’re right. The concept was first introduced under John Major’s Conservative government in the early 1990s. But just look at the few PFI deals the Tories actually did—they were sensible, limited, and financially controlled. It was only when Tony Blair and Gordon Brown got their hands on PFIs that things spiralled out of control. They went on a reckless spending spree, signing hundreds of eye-wateringly expensive, long-term contracts, without a thought for how much it would cost taxpayers down the line. They were like kids with high-interest credit cards, splashing the cash and leaving future generations to pick up the bill.
THE FUTURE UNDER LABOUR: MORE DEBT, MORE PFIs, MORE FINANCIAL RUIN
And now? Labour are looking at PFIs again.
Once Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves run out of taxpayers’ money (which they will), once they force businesses to shut down and wreck the economy further, they’ll turn back to PFIs—saddling future generations with yet more crippling debt.
Imagine if the NHS had twice as much money every year. No waiting lists, more doctors, better hospitals. But no—half of it is wasted, swallowed up by Labour’s PFI catastrophe.
This is Labour’s true legacy: wrecking Britain’s finances, draining public services, and leaving taxpayers with the bill.
And yet, they dare to blame the Tories.
The public needs to stop falling for it. Labour’s economic vandalism is still being paid for today—and will be for decades to come.
