Let’s be clear about one thing: it is not the role of Westminster or any set of bureaucrats to decide whether MPs can present shows on GB News or any other platform.
In a democracy as vibrant and free as ours, that decision rests with you, the people.
If you disagree with your MP’s extracurricular activities, the answer is simple—vote them out at the next election! But for Keir Starmer and his lot to suggest they can dictate what MPs do is downright wrong. MPs don’t work for Keir Starmer; they work for you.
If voters don’t like what their MP is up to, they can vote them out at the ballot box. It’s that simple.
This is a slippery slope and we must guard against it. The moment we start restricting the ability of MPs to express themselves on media platforms, we’re cracking open the door to a massive threat to free speech. What’s next? Will they start deciding which opinions are acceptable for an MP to hold? This is not how democracy works.
MPs are elected representatives, accountable only to the people who sent them to Westminster. The public knows their MP’s values, they know their MP’s voice, and if they take issue with how they use that voice, it’s the voters, not faceless officials, who should make the final call.
The very essence of our democracy is that voters hold the power. They alone decide who represents them. They don’t need Westminster mandarins telling them what’s right or wrong for their MP to do on air. This heavy-handedness is simply a way to stifle debate and narrow the range of voices that can reach the public. That’s not Britain. Britain thrives on open debate, on a free press, and on politicians being accessible to the people they serve.
So, let’s not mince words here. This is about freedom – the freedom of MPs to speak directly to you and the freedom of the British people to decide who they want to keep in power.
Politicians don’t work for Starmer or bureaucrats. They work for you. Let the voters decide, not the bureaucrats!
