UK scientists help create largest-ever infrared map of the Milky Way

British scientists have played a pivotal role in creating the largest infrared map of the Milky Way, thanks to an ambitious project led by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC).

Over 13 years, the VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) in Chile has captured a staggering 1.5 billion celestial objects, offering an unprecedented view of our galaxy’s complex structure.

Mapping the Milky Way’s Heart

Beginning in 2010, the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey, along with its extension, VVVX, dedicated 420 nights of observations to photographing the Milky Way’s central regions. The result? A detailed, panoramic image that sheds light on the galaxy’s composition, unearthing fascinating phenomena such as ancient globular clusters, elusive hypervelocity stars, and clear galactic windows that pierce through interstellar dust.

Dante Minniti, the project’s lead astrophysicist, summed up the impact of this work: “We made so many discoveries, we have changed the view of our Galaxy forever.”

UK’s Leading Role in the Groundbreaking Telescope

The UK’s contribution to this astronomical milestone cannot be overstated. The STFC’s UK ATC team, in collaboration with 18 universities across the UK, was instrumental in the development and delivery of VISTA to the European Southern Observatory (ESO). A key achievement was the creation of the telescope’s state-of-the-art infrared camera, the largest of its kind at the time it was built, designed by STFC’s RAL Space and their partners.

The telescope, boasting a 4.1-metre mirror, is the world’s largest dedicated infrared survey telescope. Its ability to observe at wavelengths invisible to the human eye allows it to study objects such as brown dwarfs and free-floating planets that remain hidden to conventional telescopes.

Scientific Impact and Future Endeavours

The VVV and VVVX surveys have already resulted in over 300 scientific publications and 30 doctoral theses. The extensive dataset has provided invaluable insights into galactic structure, stellar populations, and the characteristics of variable stars and star clusters. Dr. Oscar Gonzalez, a senior scientist at UK ATC, described the completion of the Milky Way map as a “remarkable achievement for the astronomy community,” highlighting its potential to revolutionise our understanding of the Universe for years to come.

Looking forward, VISTA’s journey is far from over. It will soon be upgraded with a new instrument, 4MOST, and will work alongside ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) fitted with the Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph (MOONS). These advancements promise to deliver even more detailed spectra of the Milky Way’s objects, unlocking countless new discoveries.

A True UK Achievement

The success of VISTA and the VVV surveys is a testament to the UK’s robust capability in pioneering scientific research. Delivered as part of the UK’s accession agreement to ESO, the project management was overseen by the UK ATC, with substantial contributions from British universities. The telescope’s successful deployment and operation underscore the UK’s leading role in global astronomical research and innovation.

Professor Philip Lucas from the University of Hertfordshire, a key figure in the project, explained: “By mapping the Milky Way in the infrared, we were able to pierce the obscuring veil of interstellar dust and gas that hides most of our Galaxy in visible light.”

The VISTA consortium, led by Queen Mary, University of London, included institutions from across the UK, such as the University of Cambridge, Durham University, and the University of Edinburgh. Their collective efforts have not only placed the UK at the forefront of astronomical research but have also laid a strong foundation for future explorations of our galaxy and beyond.

As ESO’s Paranal Observatory prepares for its next chapter, with upgrades to both VISTA and the VLT, the UK’s role in expanding our cosmic horizons continues to grow. With a wealth of data still to be explored, the future of British astronomy looks as bright as the stars it studies.

It became an in-kind contribution to ESO as part of the UK’s accession agreement.

Project management for the telescope design and construction was undertaken by the STFC’s UK ATC.

Provisional acceptance of VISTA was formally granted by ESO at a ceremony at ESO’s Headquarters in Garching, Germany, attended by representatives of Queen Mary, University of London and STFC, on 10 December 2009.

The telescope is now operated by ESO.
