In a monumental display of hypocrisy, Labour’s so-called green government has billed the British taxpayer for sending an eye-watering 470 delegates to the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Despite Keir Starmer’s endless rhetoric about Britain’s commitment to Net Zero, this lavish taxpayer-funded junket has left many questioning the true priorities of a government that claims to be focused on “saving the planet” while leaving a massive carbon footprint in its wake.
The revelations, uncovered by the Mail on Sunday, show that Labour’s delegation to the climate talks was far larger than that of any other European country. Official figures reveal that Britain sent a staggering 354 government officials and ministers to the summit, along with an additional 116 representatives from Crown dependencies, overseas territories, and private sector interests. This was all at the taxpayer’s expense, of course.
Among the attendees were Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Ed Miliband, who leads Labour’s climate crusade. Yet, while Labour preaches austerity for ordinary families, its ministers were reportedly staying in luxury hotels where suites cost up to £800 a night.
And let’s not forget, all this pomp and circumstance comes amid reports that COP29 is becoming a glorified talk shop, with many influential world leaders opting to skip the event altogether.
A Carbon Footprint That Doesn’t Add Up
For a party that constantly lectures the public on the urgency of reducing carbon emissions and has banned new UK oil and gas licences, stopped our steel manufacturing, ended all coal mining and is keen to roll out ULEZ expansions, the environmental impact of Labour’s own delegation is staggering. The Mail on Sunday worked out the British contingent racked up an estimated 2.3 million air miles, contributing at least 338 tons of CO2 – hardly the picture of eco-friendliness.
As former minister Graham Stringer noted, the hypocrisy is blatant: “There are more private jets and large jets going to Baku than anywhere else at the moment. It’s a complete waste of money.” Reform MP Richard Tice was even more scathing, calling it the “Everest of hypocrisy.”
A £1,000-a-Day ‘Advisor’ to Save Taxpayer Money?
Adding insult to injury, this comes hot on the heels of news that Labour has hired a new consultant at £1,000 a day to advise on how to cut government spending. Yes, you read that correctly. While millions of hard-working Britons tighten their belts, Labour thinks nothing of splashing taxpayers’ cash on extravagance.
And yet, when it comes to ordinary citizens, Labour shows no mercy. Starmer’s latest pledge to slash emissions by 81% by 2035 means higher costs for homeowners, with threats of forced upgrades to gas boilers and calls to cut back on meat consumption. UK taxpayers will also be funding Labour’s net zero projects abroad under Miliband’s plans.
A Summit in Luxury, as Costs Mount for Taxpayers
It wasn’t just the sheer number of delegates that raised eyebrows. Reports revealed that members of the British contingent, including Keir Starmer’s own media team, stayed in luxury suites at the Qafqaz Baku City Hotel, where even standard rooms start at £400 a night. Some even splurged on caviar, costing up to £63 an ounce, as they rubbed shoulders with Azerbaijan’s elites.
Even the Prime Minister’s videographer and the Foreign Office’s “head of creative” made the list, sparking questions about why taxpayer money was being used to fund the attendance of government content creators at a climate summit.
Where Are the Real Results?
Despite this obscene display of extravagance, the summit itself is widely viewed as increasingly irrelevant. A total of 66,778 delegates have descended upon Baku, yet former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently declared the COP process “no longer fit for purpose.”
With 65 private jets landing in Baku ahead of the summit, it’s clear that Labour’s Net Zero agenda is little more than hot air. And yet, the Government had the gall to defend its excessive presence, claiming that any carbon footprint was “dwarfed by the carbon prize of delivering our agenda.”
Labour’s Arrogance Laid Bare
Let’s not mince words: Labour is taking the British public for fools. At a time when families across the country are struggling with the cost of living, Labour’s decision to send a bloated, 470-strong delegation to a climate summit reeks of arrogance and hypocrisy.
The British people deserve better than a government that preaches austerity while splurging on luxury for itself. As the economy wobbles and ordinary citizens bear the brunt of rising prices, it’s clear that Labour’s priorities lie not with the people they claim to represent, but with burnishing their own global image.
Sir Keir Starmer, it’s time to come back down to earth. Britain can’t afford your hypocrisy any longer.
