ACT NOW: Email your MP Today to Support Jim Allister’s Bill to Restore Northern Ireland’s Place in the Union

This Friday, a crucial Private Member’s Bill aimed at restoring Northern Ireland’s place in the Union will have its second and crucial reading in the House of Commons.

Proposed by Jim Allister, the Traditional Unionist Voice MP for North Antrim, the legislation seeks to replace Rishi Sunak’s controversial Windsor Framework deal with a solution that eliminates the Irish Sea border and restores the integrity of the United Kingdom.

The Case for Change

Ann Widdecombe, a prominent supporter of the Bill, has been outspoken about the damage caused by the current arrangement. She described the Irish Sea border as not only a humiliation for Northern Ireland but a degradation of the United Kingdom as a whole.

“The EU has not just humiliated Northern Ireland by imposing the Irish Sea border: it has humiliated the United Kingdom as a whole by cutting our country into two, making everything on the Northern Ireland side of the border an EU colony,” Widdecombe stated. “This is not only completely degrading, but it is also completely unnecessary. Jim Allister’s Mutual Enforcement Bill demonstrates there is a way of protecting the integrity of both the EU and UK Single Markets without discrimination.”

The Bill proposes a mutual enforcement mechanism that would respect the trade requirements of both sides while removing the need for internal borders. Proponents argue it provides a workable alternative that strengthens both sovereignty and economic stability.

The Stakes for the Union

The implications of this legislation stretch far beyond Northern Ireland. MPs are being urged to recognise that the current arrangement, which leaves Northern Ireland subject to over 300 EU laws, has ramifications for the entire UK.

Restore the Union, a campaign group backing the Bill, has emphasised the importance of public engagement. “MPs pay far more attention to letters from constituents than to lobbying in Westminster,” the group said, encouraging citizens to contact their MPs ahead of the debate. They’ve made it simple by offering pre-drafted letters that can be sent in under a minute via their website.

How to Get Involved

The ‘Restore the Union’ website has provided three model letters tailored to residents of different parts of the UK, highlighting the shared interest in resolving this issue. They urge everyone who values the unity of the UK to take action.

Widcombe added: “This is really important. Everyone who cares about the future of our country in England, Wales, and Scotland—as well as in Northern Ireland—must now write to their MPs. This website provides an easy way to do so. Please don’t rest today until you’ve contacted your MP and asked friends and family to do the same.”

What’s Next?

The debate begins at 9:30 am this Friday, December 6th, and is expected to run until 2:30 pm. Supporters of the Bill are calling for a strong turnout of MPs to ensure a full and robust discussion. PLEASE email your MP today.
