The British Army has unveiled a cutting-edge robotic bomb disposal system – including Boston Dynamics’ Spot the Dog, now armed with a powerful disruptor to neutralise explosives at a safe distance.
In a dramatic four-day trial, military scientists at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) put a range of advanced robotic systems to the test, proving they could detect, assess, and defuse bombs without risking human lives.
Tech That Saves Lives
Spot, already famous for its agility, is now equipped with a high-tech carbon fire disruptor—a specialist tool that fires a jet of fluid or a projectile at explosive devices, either disabling or destroying them before they can detonate.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said:
“Using robots like Spot for bomb disposal removes personnel from immediate danger, making operations faster, safer, and more effective.”
The Future of Bomb Disposal
The live trials saw robots performing critical real-world battlefield tasks, including:

🔹 Drones with AI detecting potential threats and tracking people.
🔹 Robots opening doors and climbing stairs to access hard-to-reach areas.
Dstl partnered with top defence tech firms including L3Harris, Marlborough Communications Ltd, and AeroVironment (Tomahawk Robotics) to push the limits of military robotics.
