The Union Flag was flying high in Hluboká this week as Great Britain’s women stormed to glory, lifting the WBSC Europe Women’s Baseball European Championship after a nail-biting seven-inning thriller against hosts Czechia.

The British side, playing only their second-ever tournament, defied the odds and brought home a stunning 9–7 victory, sealing their place in the history books and sparking wild celebrations.

A Final Fit for Champions

The showdown began at full throttle, with both teams scoring two runs in the first inning. But it was GB who seized the initiative, piling on runs through Darier Malone’s double and razor-sharp base running to take control in the second.

By the third, the Brits had stretched the lead to 5–2. Czechia clawed their way back to level in the fourth, only for the British women to keep their composure, tighten the defence and strike back with another burst of scoring in the sixth.

Up 9–6 going into the last inning, it all came down to the defence. With two Czech batters already out, the home crowd roared as a triple threatened to undo GB’s hard work. But it was Claury Scatliffe who silenced the stadium, striking out the final batter to secure Britain’s first-ever women’s European crown.

Heroes of Hluboká

Natasha Romoff and Scatliffe led from the front with three hits each, Romoff stealing three bases and Scatliffe racking up six total bases. Pitcher Oona Ylinen bravely returned to the mound just hours after starting the earlier round robin game, throwing three strong innings before Scatliffe powered through to close out the final.

Third baseman Katherine Golik said afterwards:

“We did what we set out to do, and even though there were some close games, there was never any doubts in our dugout.”

An Against-the-Odds Triumph

This was no easy path to glory. Heavy rain delays forced GB into a gruelling Sunday schedule, starting at 9:30am against the Netherlands and ending hours later with the gold-medal clash.

After a disastrous start against the Dutch, falling 9–0 behind, the British women dug deep, showing bulldog spirit to claw back 10 runs and snatch victory. That set the stage for their unforgettable final.

Even before Sunday, the underdog Brits had shown they meant business, hammering two-time champions France 16–1 in the opener.

History Made

BBF President Richard Evans praised the team’s achievement:

“Every player, coach and staff member deserves the largest congratulations for this amazing achievement. Our baseball community has witnessed the effort and commitment they have shown over the past three years to get themselves ready to deliver in Czechia — and deliver they did.”

This triumph marks Great Britain’s second continental baseball title in a single year, after the U-23s lifted their own European crown earlier in 2025.

The women’s team will now fly the flag on the world stage, heading to the 2026 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group Stage alongside France and the Netherlands.

Against the odds, the British women have shown what determination, teamwork and national pride can achieve. And with gold medals glinting under the lights of Hluboká, one message rang out loud and clear: It’s coming home. Well done Team GB!
