This week we mourned the passing of Lord Lawson, one of the giants of British politics and a great champion of our Conservative values.
Nigel was part of that great generation of visionary Conservatives who believed that our country should not accept the consensus of post-war decline.
Along with Margaret Thatcher, Geoffrey Howe, Cecil Parkinson and Norman Tebbit, they set out to transform Britain back into a world-leading power with an economy built on the ingenuity of the British people and their confidence in sound money, capitalism and the power of free enterprise.
Nigel was instrumental in pursuing the ambitious and inspirational policies that reduced taxes, rolled back the frontiers of the state and gave more people the chance to live in a property-owning democracy. In those years we saw home ownership rise, businesses grow and entrepreneurship flourish as our Conservative Government tore down the barriers to enterprise and removed restrictions on our freedom.
Nigel Lawson’s Impact: Fostering Growth and Aspiration in Britain
By embracing the principle of promoting more economic freedoms for hard-working families and businesses, Nigel and that great reforming Conservative Government of the 1980s transformed our country into a successful economic powerhouse and delivered consecutive election wins for our Party.
I was inspired to join the Conservatives because I grew up seeing how we transformed Britain for the better, created new opportunities, and embraced aspiration and hard work. I know that many of our Party’s members, supporters and grassroots activists feel the same and share that belief that the Conservative Party’s mission should be to deliver more economic freedoms to families and businesses. We should be the Party that stands for low taxes and economic freedoms as that is what separates us from the declinists and socialists that believe in big government and high taxes. If we do not make the case for capitalism, low taxes and free enterprise, then we risk losing the freedoms that Nigel and Margaret fought so hard for.
The Enduring Importance of Conservative Values
Our values matter as much today as they did in the 1970s and 1980s and that is why your support is so important to our Party. At this time of economic and political uncertainty, and with a General Election set to take place in the months ahead, we need our members and activists more than ever to promote our Conservative values.
We need our membership mobilised to decide the candidates who will fight the next General Election for us and be elected to deliver our Conservative values in Government. We need our membership to keep making the case for low taxes and free enterprise. And we need our membership to help develop our next manifesto and the policies that will capture the attention and imagination of the public so that they trust and elect a Conservative Government.
Strengthening Democracy & Advancing Opportunity: Our Conservative Mission
The Conservative Democratic Organisation know that our Party is at its strongest when it welcomes and embraces the values that we hold. We must work together to continue to promote those values, strengthen democracy within our Party, and champion a Conservative mission that delivers freedom and opportunity for our great country.
