The world-renowned Band of the Coldstream Guards captivated audiences at Japan’s most prestigious venue this week, the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, in a spectacular performance showcasing the strength of Anglo-Japanese friendship.
Currently touring Japan, the British Army band is delivering a unique blend of outstanding musical performances, defence diplomacy, and shared values, highlighting the UK’s enduring partnership with one of its most important allies in the Indo-Pacific region.

The soldiers, who routinely accompany The King’s Guards during state ceremonial duties at Buckingham Palace, expressed their excitement at performing in such an iconic venue.
“The acoustics are phenomenal,” said musician Olivia Watts. “For any musician playing in that space, it’s so rewarding. Japan has the best concert halls in the world, and they enable all of us to be our very best. It’s a wonderful feeling!”

For percussion soloist Musician Ashley Clegg, the evening held particular significance. Among the audience was his close friend, Yasuaki Fukuhara, whom he had not seen since their university days at Manchester.
Fukuhara, who is now a monk in Tokyo, rushed to secure a ticket upon learning the Coldstream Guards were performing in his city. The emotional reunion added a personal touch to the night’s festivities, as the concert hall’s festive atrium buzzed with excitement.
