This was not a stroll, nor a smash and grab. It was a victory forged through resilience, tactical precision and a defiance that only hardened as the pressure rose. From 12 points down, England surged, 25 unanswered points, before resisting a late New Zealand counterpunch and sealing the contest with a try that will be replayed for years.
A BRUTAL OPENING, A FEROCIOUS RESPONSE
The match began with England’s defence setting the tone, Steward and Underhill cutting down runners with bone-rattling tackles, yet the All Blacks struck first. Leicester Fainga’anuku powered over, and Codie Taylor soon followed after a brilliant 50:22 from Cam Roigard turned the tide. At 12–0 down, England looked in danger of being swept away.
But Ollie Lawrence, brimming with power and intent, ignited the fightback. Cutting a brutal line down the blindside, he battered through two defenders to drag England back into the match. It was the moment the momentum pivoted.
