The UK’s Oxford and Cambridge Universities rank higher than Harvard and Stanford.
The 20th edition of the QS World University Rankings featuring 1,500 institutions across 104 locations has ranked 4 of its top 10 places to British universities.
When looking at just Europe, the UK takes 7 of the top ten university spots.
The QS World University Rankings is the only ranking of its kind to emphasise employability and sustainability.
This year, they also implemented the largest-ever methodological enhancement, introducing three new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes and International Research Network.
The results draw on the analysis of 17.5m academic papers and the expert opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology celebrates twelve years at the top, the University of Cambridge retains 2nd place while the University of Oxford (3rd) climbs one position.
Imperial College London also got a top 10 spot ranking 6th best university in the world and UCL came in at 9th position.
Looking at just the European university rankings, the UK held 7 of the top 10 spots in Europe.
