At least 25 inflatable boats, along with 25 outboard engines, bound for people smuggling gangs operating in the English Channel have been intercepted at the Port of Felixstowe, in a significant operation led by the National Crime Agency.
The haul, described by officials as one of the largest of its kind, was uncovered on Saturday, 18 July, when NCA officers, working alongside specialist Border Force search teams and with full cooperation from the Port of Felixstowe, located the equipment inside a shipping container that had originated in China.
The vessels, each measuring roughly ten metres in length, were found packed alongside Parsun outboard engines, the type frequently used to power the flimsy dinghies favoured by smuggling gangs for cross-Channel crossings. Investigators believe this marks the first time a bulk shipment of boats and engines, destined specifically for people smugglers, has been seized on UK soil.
The discovery brings the total number of boats and engines intercepted by the NCA and its international partners, since the Agency began targeting smuggling supply chains in early 2023, to more than 1,500.
Germany Named as Intended Destination
According to the NCA, the container’s next scheduled stop, after passing through Felixstowe, would have been the German port of Hamburg, where the equipment was expected to be unloaded. Germany, investigators note, has long served as a staging point for boats and engines later funnelled into smuggling networks operating out of northern France and Belgium.
Officials estimate that each boat, once in use, could have carried around 80 people across the Channel, meaning the full consignment, had it reached the French coast, might have been used to endanger the lives of roughly 2,000 migrants attempting the crossing.
The NCA has stressed that there is, at this stage, no indication that the ship’s crew or operators were aware of the container’s true contents. The investigation into those responsible for organising the shipment is ongoing, and continues to involve law enforcement partners overseas.
Officials Praise Cross-Agency Cooperation
NCA Branch Commander Adam Berry welcomed the seizure, calling it a significant strike against the finances of the criminal network involved. He noted that, once investigators established the shipment’s route through a UK port en route to Germany, officers were able to move quickly, working with Border Force to halt its progress before it could go any further. Berry added that disrupting supply lines remains just one part of the Agency’s broader strategy for undermining smuggling operations, and confirmed that the investigation is continuing.
Border Security Commander Duncan Capps CBE echoed that assessment, describing the seizure as another serious setback for the gangs behind dangerous, illegal Channel crossings. He credited the combined efforts of the NCA, Home Office intelligence teams, and Border Force officers, saying such disruptions to criminal networks and their supply chains are now occurring more frequently than ever. Capps added that authorities would continue to investigate, pursue, and detain those responsible for smuggling small boat equipment, ensuring they face the full force of the law.
Part of a Wider Crackdown
Tackling organised immigration crime remains, officials say, a top priority for the NCA, which has increased the resources devoted to targeting the criminal networks behind Channel crossings. This shift, the Agency says, is already producing measurable operational results, including a rise in seizures, arrests, and broader disruptions to smuggling operations.
The NCA currently has more than 100 active investigations into individuals and networks suspected of involvement in people smuggling.
