New legislation to be introduced through the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. 18. UK’s inbound tourism forecast for 2023 upgraded on back of stronger recovery
VisitBritain have upgraded their 2023 inbound tourism forecast. Visits overall to the UK this year are now forecast to be 37.5 million, 92% of 2019 levels and inbound visitor spending £30.9 billion, up 9%. The annual VisitBritain forecast for the volume and value of inbound tourism to the UK is issued towards the end of each year and revised mid-year after the final official inbound statistics are released. 17. England’s butterflies, bats and water voles among rare species set to benefit from new funding announced
63 projects awarded share of £14.5 million to support species recovery across England. Some of England’s most rare and threatened species – from the Large Marsh Grasshopper, native White-Clawed Crayfish to Lapwings and Water Voles – are to be supercharged on the road to recovery thanks to a multi-million-pound grant scheme. The Species Recovery Programme Grant Scheme supports targeted action to recover our most endangered species. A new supercomputer set to be one the most powerful in Europe is to be built in Bristol, in a move to drive pioneering AI research and innovation in the UK. The UK government has confirmed the University of Bristol will host the new AI Research Resource (AIRR), which will serve as a national facility to help researchers maximise the potential of AI and support critical work into the potential and safe use of the technology. 15. UK joins top Gulf commerce ministers for trade talks in Oman
Nigel Huddleston, UK Minister for International Trade, is in Oman this week to hold talks with top trade ministers from across the Gulf region. This is the first time a UK Minister has been invited in this capacity to attend the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Commerce Ministers’ summit – part of a regular series attended by commerce ministers from all six GCC countries. The summit comes a year after the first round of talks on a UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement. 14. 25,000 people to be helped into work as government ramps up roll-out of flagship Universal Support scheme
Up to 25,000 people will benefit from new employment support starting this week as part of the Government’s flagship Universal Support programme. Backed by £53 million in funding, the new scheme will provide personalised help to people facing complex barriers to work across England and Wales as part of the Government’s plan to tackle economic inactivity and spread the benefits of employment more widely. Participants will be identified and referred by work coaches as well as contracted providers and it is expected to have helped 25,000 people move towards employment by September 2024… click here

11. New Government-backed employment scheme launched to upskill and match jobseekers with UK’s hospitality roles
Jobseekers are now able to access a new Government-backed employment programme designed to fill vacancies in the hospitality sector. The pilot scheme, set to launch in Liverpool before being rolled out to other major cities over the coming months, will see benefit claimants gain an industry recognised accreditation, endorsed by industry leaders including Greene King, Marriot Hotels and ACC Liverpool. 9. Relaxed takeaway pints rules extended across England and Wales
Relaxed licensing regulations that allow pubs, restaurants and bars to sell takeaway pints without red tape holding them back have been extended. Al fresco drinking, first introduced widely during the pandemic, has allowed the public to support their local pubs and business by having the choice to take away their drinks, providing a boost to local businesses and bringing in extra revenue. 8. BRITISH INNOVATION: Aircraft drone makes history landing on Royal Navy carrier at sea
A leading-edge British firm has joined forces with the Royal Navy to fly a pilotless plane on and off HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier for the first time. 7. BMW’s announcement takes UK auto investment to over £6 billion
During a visit to the MINI plant in Oxford, Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch this week hailed the success of the UK Government’s plan for automotive, as the sector looks ahead to a bright future thanks to over £6 billion of investment over the last two years. This comes as BMW announced a multi-million pound investment to transform their Oxford plant, securing 4,000 high-quality jobs and strengthening the electric vehicle supply chain. 6. Government delivers over one billion pounds of support to over 100,000 small firms
A government backed loan scheme created to help entrepreneurs start and scale up their business has now provided over £1 billion of funding to over 100,000 businesses. Sellafield Ltd will be welcoming 325 new apprentices and graduates as they embark on an exciting career at the largest and most complex nuclear site in the UK. 2. £600 million into UK in major boost for British manufacturing production with two new electric Mini models
BMW looks set to bolster Mini’s electric car production at its factory near Oxford and secure 4,000 high-quality jobs by investing £600 million into Britain in a major boost for UK manufacturing. The production of two new electric Mini models is due to begin at the plant in Cowley in 2026. BMW’s decision to redirect cash from China to Britain is also expected to bolster another factory in Swindon.
