England’s win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday was hailed as one of their “greatest ever” and gives them a 1-0 lead in the five-match cricket series.
England have beaten India by 28 runs in the first cricket Test in Hyderabad as Tom Hartley took seven wickets on his debut.
Star performances from Hartley achieving a seven-wicket haul and Ollie Pope scoring an incredible 196 runs in his second innings from 278 deliveries sealed the memorable Test win in Hyderabad.
India returned to the crease needing just 231 runs to win, however, Hartley took the wicket of Jaiswal before getting Gill out for a duck. Jack Leach and Joe Root both also took wickets while captain Ben Stokes ran out Jadeja with a brilliant piece of fielding.
Wicket-keeper Ben Foakes also played a key role as he stumped Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj to seal the win.
England Captain Ben Stokes said: “This is the greatest win in my captaincy career.”
He added: “Incredibly proud. We were 190 behind, going into our second innings. Before the series started, we knew how much of a beast India are at home but the way we responded to being so far behind, it was testament to everything we have said and lived and breathed over the last two years.
“But we’ve got four Tests left. It’s about backing up this performance now. We know that India are going to come back harder at us, they are an incredibly tough team but if we can keep standing up to them, it’s a good sign for us.
“But it’s very early days, we are very proud to be 1-0 up but there is a long way to go.”
