Reform Party leader and close ally of Donald Trump, Nigel Farage, has hit out at Labour, calling it “ludicrous” for damaging the UK’s relationship with the former US President at such an early stage of Keir Starmer’s government.
Farage’s comments follow a row over the Labour Party allegedly campaigning for US Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the upcoming American presidential election.
Farage, speaking to Times Radio, criticised Labour’s involvement, saying that British backing for a candidate just days before the US election is “not good politics” and “not grown up.” He emphasized that such interference could have long-term diplomatic consequences, especially if Trump were to win the presidency once again.
“Trump actually is a very forgiving person… but it takes a little bit of time,” Farage said. “It makes no sense for a British government to get involved openly backing a candidate with less than a fortnight to go before the American elections, especially if Trump wins. It is not good diplomacy, it is not good politics, it is not grown up.”
When asked whether Trump would eventually forgive Starmer for this apparent involvement in the US election, Farage responded, “Ultimately, but maybe not for a bit. And why get the relationship off to a bad start? It is ludicrous.”
Farage further expressed confidence in Trump’s chances, stating that he is “90 per cent confident” that the former President will secure victory over Harris in the November 5 election. He stressed the importance of maintaining strong US-UK ties, particularly at a time when the two countries are key players in NATO and major investors in each other’s economies.
“Trump is going to win. I am 90 per cent confident of that,” Farage told Times Radio. “And this country, our relationship with America in terms of shared intelligence, in terms of being the linchpins of NATO at a very dangerous time… these links and ties are vital. This relationship is our most important relationship in the world, and for a newly elected governing Labour Party to actively be seen backing the other side in an election is a very big political mistake.”
Farage’s remarks reflect ongoing concerns over the impact of Labour’s actions on the UK’s relationship with the United States, particularly as the geopolitical landscape becomes increasingly fraught with challenges.
