Britain has once again demonstrated its leadership on the global stage, spearheading efforts to bolster NATO’s eastern flank and showcasing the Alliance’s formidable ability to defend Latvia and other member nations from any potential threat.
The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF)—a coalition of ten northern European nations—has successfully concluded Exercise Joint Protector in Latvia.
The large-scale operation, held over the past month, underscored NATO’s readiness and rapid response capabilities amid increasing geopolitical tensions in Europe.
A Show of Strength and Unity
As the Framework Nation of the JEF, Britain led the way in this critical exercise, coordinating the deployment of military personnel and equipment from all ten participating nations. The operation tested how quickly the JEF could mobilise to respond to emerging threats, with troops practising swift deployment across multiple locations in Latvia.
The exercise highlighted the seamless cooperation between JEF nations, proving the ability to operate as a unified force in the face of regional security challenges. It’s a testament to the UK’s leadership in fostering strong alliances and ensuring NATO remains prepared to defend its members.
Ukrainian Expertise Strengthens the Mission
For the first time, Ukrainian military officers joined the exercise, bringing invaluable insights gained from their defence against Russia’s full-scale invasion. This partnership underscores Britain’s commitment to learning from Ukraine’s resilience and incorporating those lessons into NATO’s defence strategies.
An Alliance of Strength
The JEF includes Iceland, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and the UK, with Britain providing the backbone of the coalition. Together, these nations tested their collective response to threats, reaffirming their commitment to regional stability and security.
The exercise not only improved coordination between nations but also showcased the added value of the JEF, providing NATO with a swift and flexible force capable of responding to crises.
Britain at the Heart of Northern European Security
As a leading force in NATO, Britain continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Europe’s security architecture. The JEF’s long-term vision is clear: to remain a cornerstone of Northern European defence, supporting its members, responding to threats, and contributing to the wider security of the continent.

Very good. Our troops need the training alongside other NATO partners. But just to add a broader perspective, Britain has given Ukraine £12 billion, with the promise of £3 billion each year “for as long as it takes”. The Americans have so far given $113 billion to Ukraine, with a further $60 billion in the pipeline. Audit trails have been questioned. A Canadian Minister has also revealed that, from the outset, the objective has been regime change in Moscow. On this point, Rory Stewart (before he became a busted fiush on US politics) made the interesting point that if Putin went he would be replaced from the Right !
