By any standard of justice—British or otherwise—it is an absolute scandal that Michał Kuczmierowska, a former minister in the Polish government, remains behind bars in our country without trial.
This man, a distinguished public servant, has been languishing in a British prison since September 2024, and if things continue as they are, he will have served nearly a year behind bars before his extradition hearing even takes place this July. A full year in jail without a trial. In what world is this fair?
In our relentless quest to uphold the so-called ‘rule of law’, Britain has found itself in the deeply uncomfortable position of being used as the enforcement arm of foreign political agendas. We have allowed our justice system… once the envy of the world, the gold standard of fairness and due process, to be politicised and hijacked for purposes that have nothing to do with British interests. And what’s worse, we are acting as willing stooges for regimes abroad that see justice not as a principle, but as a tool of revenge and intimidation.
Held Without Trial – A Disgrace to British Values
Let’s be clear: Michał Kuczmierowska has not been convicted of any crime. He is not a fugitive from justice. He is not a threat to the British people. And yet, he is being treated like a dangerous criminal, locked away without so much as a proper hearing to determine the merits of his case. Is this the Britain we aspire to be—a country that locks up foreign nationals on behalf of political opponents abroad, without so much as a second thought?
As former MEP Ben Habib points out, there is no justification for keeping Kuczmierowska behind bars. Britain is not a banana republic, and we should not behave like one. Our justice system was built on the foundation of fairness, impartiality, and above all, the presumption of innocence. Yet, in this case, it appears those values have been chucked out the window in favour of political expediency and foreign appeasement.
This is not just about Michał Kuczmierowska—it’s about what kind of nation we want to be. Do we want to be a country that bends the knee to any foreign government that demands the detention of their political adversaries? Or do we want to be a country that stands up for fairness, that refuses to be dragged into foreign political vendettas, and that offers a true sanctuary of justice and due process?
Bail Must Be Granted Immediately
Justice delayed is justice denied, and in this case, justice has been not only delayed but outright abandoned. Michał Kuczmierowska must be released on bail pending his hearing in July. He poses no risk to the public, and there is no reason—legal, moral, or otherwise—why he should remain imprisoned for nearly a year before even getting his day in court.
If the British government is serious about maintaining the integrity of our justice system, it must act swiftly. No more dithering. No more hiding behind bureaucratic process. The Home Office and the Ministry of Justice must step in, correct this farce, and ensure that Britain does not become a willing accomplice in foreign political witch-hunts.
The Bigger Picture – A Politicised Justice System
This sorry episode raises a much broader and more troubling question: how much longer can we tolerate the creeping politicisation of our criminal justice system? Time and again, we have seen our institutions weaponised for political ends—whether it’s through the silencing of dissent, the targeting of individuals deemed inconvenient to the establishment, or now, acting as the enforcement arm of overseas governments with questionable motives.
It’s high time we took a long, hard look at how we allow foreign legal requests to dictate our actions. It is one thing to cooperate with allies on matters of serious crime and national security. It is quite another to turn our legal system into an extension of someone else’s political apparatus.
Conclusion – Britain Must Act Now
Britain cannot, and must not, allow this to continue. Michał Kuczmierowska’s detention without trial is an affront to our values, our legal principles, and our international reputation. The message we should be sending is clear: Britain stands for justice, not for political persecution.
The government must intervene. Bail must be granted. And above all, the British people must remain vigilant to ensure that our justice system remains just that—a system of justice, not a political weapon.
