In a display of time-honoured British pageantry and military precision, the Dutch Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mr Ruben Brekelmans, was given a rousing welcome at Horse Guards Parade on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Mr Brekelmans, a key figure in NATO and a staunch ally of the UK, was received with full ceremonial honours, underscoring the deep and enduring ties between the two nations.
Welcoming him to the Army Headquarters was Major General James Bowder, the Major General Commanding the Household Division, who led him through the historic arches of Horse Guards—officially recognised as the grand entrance to the Royal Palaces.
The highlight of the visit came when Number 7 Company, Coldstream Guards, impeccably turned out in their iconic scarlet tunics and bearskins, provided a Guard of Honour for the Dutch dignitary. The stirring event was complemented by the sounds of the Band of the Grenadier Guards, under the direction of the Senior Drum Major of the Household Division, who performed the Dutch national anthem with military precision, along with an array of popular regimental marches.
In a moment of great respect and diplomatic finesse, the Captain of the Guard, Major Andy Dickinson, invited Mr Brekelmans to inspect the Guard of Honour—doing so in flawless Dutch, a gesture that did not go unnoticed and was warmly received by the visiting minister.
Following the ceremonial proceedings, Mr Brekelmans and his British counterpart, the UK Defence Secretary, retired to the Ministry of Defence’s headquarters in Whitehall for a series of high-level bilateral discussions.
