Former prime minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie, have announced the birth of their fourth child.
The baby girl, named Poppy Eliza Josephine Johnson, will be a younger sister to Wilfred, Romy and Frank.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Mrs Johnson said the family is “totally smitten” with the newest addition.
“I can’t believe how pretty and tiny you are,” she wrote. “Feel so incredibly lucky. We are all totally smitten. Not sure I’ve slept a minute since you were born as can’t stop looking at how completely lovely you are.”
Mrs Johnson also expressed gratitude to the medical team at University College Hospital (UCLH), where all four of her children have been born.
“Thank you so much to the amazing maternity team at UCLH and particularly to Asma and Patrick who have looked after me so well through all my pregnancies. I really cannot thank you guys enough.”
She added that baby Poppy may also be known by the nicknames “Pops” or “Pop Tart.”
While the couple has not disclosed the inspiration behind Poppy’s full name, the middle name Josephine may be in tribute to Carrie Johnson’s mother, Josephine McAffee, a former newspaper lawyer.
The couple’s other children include:
- Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson, born in April 2020, whose name honours two doctors who treated Mr Johnson during the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Romy Iris Charlotte Johnson, born in December 2021.
- Frank Alfred Odysseus Johnson, born in July 2023. After his birth, Mrs Johnson joked, “Can you guess which name my husband chose?”—a likely reference to Mr Johnson’s well-known passion for the classics.
Carrie Johnson (née Symonds) is a former Conservative Party communications officer. She served as head of communications during Theresa May’s tenure and previously advised senior ministers including Sajid Javid and John Whittingdale.
Her relationship with Boris Johnson became public in 2019, shortly before he was elected Conservative leader and prime minister. When Mr Johnson entered Downing Street in July 2019, she became the first unmarried partner of a sitting prime minister to reside there. The couple married in May 2021.
They now reside in South Oxfordshire, in a Grade II listed 17th-century home with nine bedrooms and five acres of grounds.
Poppy Eliza Josephine Johnson becomes the fourth child of the couple, marking another milestone for the former prime minister and his wife. Congratulations Boris and Carrie!
