Great Britain’s men’s gymnastics team have stormed to their third European team title in spectacular fashion, delivering a masterclass of consistency and brilliance in Leipzig, Germany.
Led by Olympic stars Jake Jarman, Harry Hepworth, and Luke Whitehouse, and joined by major championships debutantes Jonas Rushworth and Jamie Lewis, the British squad dazzled the crowds with a near-faultless performance that secured them the gold medal with a commanding score of 247.528 points.
The team’s emphatic win underlined their dominance across all apparatus, with standout performances throughout the competition. “This is incredible!” an elated Harry Hepworth said afterwards. “Our preparation was awesome and we competed with massive confidence and you could see how ready we were. To go through the whole competition without any mistakes across the board is a huge achievement – we’re all so proud – it’s a big result for us all.”
The team set the tone early with a confident start on the pommel horse, as young debutantes Jamie Lewis and Jonas Rushworth handled the pressure with aplomb. Lewis particularly impressed with a standout score of 13.633.
On rings, the British gymnasts showed their trademark power and precision, with Hepworth leading the way with a huge 14.4 – the third-highest of the day. Vault saw more top-tier action, as Hepworth (14.349, 4th) and Jarman (14.549, 1st) both delivered massive scores, showcasing their Olympic pedigree and intent for individual medals.
Parallel bars saw further polished routines from the squad, while the always challenging high bar brought more highlights, particularly from Rushworth and Lewis who delivered under pressure. The competition culminated on floor where the Brits sealed the title in style. Hepworth (14.4, 3rd), Jarman and reigning European champion Whitehouse (14.266, 4th) all dazzled to put the gold beyond doubt.
Yesterday’s event also served as qualification for the individual finals, with multiple Brits advancing. Hepworth qualified for the rings, vault, and floor finals. Jarman topped the vault standings, while Whitehouse joins Hepworth in the floor final.
Jamie Lewis (7th) and Luke Whitehouse (3rd) both qualified for Thursday’s all-around final, continuing Britain’s strong presence in the competition.
Also competing in Leipzig was British specialist Courtney Tulloch, entered as an individual and not contributing to the team score. Tulloch produced a superb rings routine to match Hepworth’s 14.4 and secure a place in Friday’s final. He also impressed on parallel bars, scoring 13.833 to book another final spot.
Looking ahead, history is being made today with the debut of the first-ever Artistic Gymnastics European Championships Mixed Team final. Great Britain will be represented by Ruby Evans and Jake Jarman in what promises to be a thrilling and innovative new event.
