UKRI’s £76 Million Investment Launches New Era of National Supercomputing

Britain is stepping boldly into a new era of scientific leadership, as UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) unveils a landmark £76 million investment to establish four cutting-edge National Compute Resources (NCRs) across the country.

The funding marks a defining moment in the UK’s ambition to become a global powerhouse in advanced research and innovation. These new “digital engines” will equip British scientists, engineers and innovators with the processing muscle needed to tackle society’s most pressing challenges — from revolutionising healthcare and accelerating drug discovery to fighting climate change and building greener industries.

A Major Step in the UK Compute Roadmap

This transformative public investment is the first major milestone in delivering the UK Compute Roadmap, the national strategy launched in July 2025 to secure Britain’s place at the forefront of high-tech research.

Once the preserve of niche technical specialists, supercomputing is now set to become a tool for the entire research community. Whether mapping the human genome, designing low-carbon aircraft, modelling climate systems or analysing centuries of digital archives, researchers across disciplines will benefit from unprecedented computing power.

Why Compute Matters

At its heart, “compute” is the immense digital horsepower required to process vast datasets and run complex simulations. It underpins modern breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, medicine, engineering and environmental science.

By investing in four distinct compute systems, UKRI is ensuring:

  • Diverse technology – tailored hardware to meet different research demands
  • Easier access – simplified systems so even first-time users can harness supercomputing
  • Long-term support – funding for both the advanced infrastructure and five years of expert services through to 2031

The new NCRs will work alongside the UK’s flagship AI and supercomputing services, strengthening the nation’s digital backbone.

By widening access to high-performance computing, the programme aims to shorten the path from bold idea to real-world impact — fuelling innovation, boosting productivity and strengthening Britain’s competitive edge.

The four systems will be led by world-class institutions:

  • University of Birmingham – GPU-based system
  • University of Cambridge – GPU-based system
  • University of Edinburgh – CPU-based system
  • University College London – CPU-based system

Together, they represent a truly national effort — driving opportunity and growth across all regions of the UK.

The Power Behind the Breakthroughs

Two of the NCRs will be powered by graphics processing units (GPUs) — highly specialised processors capable of handling thousands of tasks simultaneously. GPUs are ideally suited to artificial intelligence and data-intensive research, including simulating molecular interactions to speed up drug discovery and analysing vast datasets at scale.

The other two systems will rely on central processing units (CPUs) — the versatile “brains” of computing. CPU-based systems excel at traditional scientific simulations, engineering calculations and general-purpose research, supporting everything from modelling infrastructure to informing high-level decision-making.

Together, these complementary technologies will deliver massive parallel-processing strength and reliable high-speed capability across a broad spectrum of research fields.

What Happens Next?

At least two of the NCRs are expected to launch in summer 2026, with all four fully operational between 2026 and 2027.

To ensure maximum impact, UKRI will also establish new community centres of excellence. These hubs will provide expert training and support, ensuring researchers from across disciplines — including those new to high-performance computing — can harness the full power of these digital tools.
