Royal Navy advances minehunting capability with new technology for RFA Lyme Bay

The Royal Navy is strengthening its ability to counter underwater threats with the introduction of advanced uncrewed systems to RFA Lyme Bay, marking a significant step in the evolution of Britain’s maritime defence.

In the coming days, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel will be fitted with cutting edge equipment designed to detect, identify and neutralise mines and other hazards beneath the waves. The upgrade forms part of the Navy’s transition towards a “Hybrid Navy”, where crewed ships and autonomous systems operate side by side.

The move follows Lyme Bay being brought to heightened readiness several weeks ago, reflecting the increasing importance of mine countermeasures in modern naval operations.

Once equipped, the Bay class ship will be capable of storing, preparing, deploying and recovering a wide range of autonomous technology, including underwater drones and uncrewed minehunting craft. In this role, Lyme Bay will act as a central hub, effectively serving as a mothership for these advanced systems.

First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, said the development demonstrated the Royal Navy’s forward looking approach:

“RFA Lyme Bay preparing for a possible minehunting mothership role is a perfect example of how we are building a Hybrid Navy, one where crewed ships and cutting edge uncrewed systems work together seamlessly to keep our people safe and our seas secure.

“Mine countermeasures have always been vital work, and by harnessing autonomous technology we are ensuring the Royal Navy remains at the forefront of underwater defence. I am proud of everyone involved in making this capability a reality.”

The vessel will undergo installation work in Gibraltar, where it will also be inspected to ensure it is fully prepared for further operations at sea. The addition of a flexible, plug and play command and control system will allow the new technology to be deployed rapidly wherever it is required.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary, long regarded as a vital support arm of the Royal Navy, continues to demonstrate its adaptability in meeting operational demands. The transformation of Lyme Bay into a platform for modern mine warfare highlights the growing importance of support ships in frontline roles.

Captain Mark Colley, Commanding Officer of Lyme Bay, praised his crew’s efforts in preparing the ship for its new task:

“The RFA is a crucial support arm of the Royal Navy and being able to act as an MCM mothership once again shows how we can adapt to the operational demand where needed.

“I am proud of the work my ship’s company has done to prepare RFA Lyme Bay, and be ready to embark this kit. Having recently returned to high readiness, we have been put through our paces but I know we are ready to support this autonomous uncrewed kit so as to play an important role in its use.”

The introduction of uncrewed minehunting systems reflects the Royal Navy’s wider ambition to integrate advanced technology across its fleet, enhancing both effectiveness and safety. By reducing the need for personnel to operate directly in hazardous environments, these systems offer a more secure and efficient means of protecting vital sea lanes.

As the concept of the Hybrid Navy takes shape, RFA Lyme Bay stands as a clear example of Britain’s commitment to innovation, operational readiness and the enduring defence of its maritime interests.
