It was a golden weekend for Team GB in Huelva, as England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy secured their first European title in men’s doubles, completing a memorable championship for British badminton.
The English duo were in imperious form throughout the week, not dropping a single game on their way to the title. Their dominance, composure, and growing maturity on court underlined a breakthrough moment years in the making.
Speaking after their victory, both players reflected on what the achievement means.
“Champions of Europe… it’s something that we’ve dreamed about ever since we were little kids, and today is a dream come true for both of us. It’s hard to put into words right now, but we’re super happy.”
Their performance in Huelva was as close to flawless as it gets, a statement of intent from a pair long regarded as one of Europe’s most promising partnerships.
Lane was quick to emphasise that their success is the result of a collective effort behind the scenes.
“We’ve played extremely well this week. I think it’s obviously we’re the ones playing on the court, but there’s credit to a lot of people back home who put in tireless effort. We’ve started on a new mini project these last couple of months with Nathan and our own private team. So it’s a big thanks to V-mobility who are sponsoring us throughout that and taking care of our coach, and it wouldn’t be possible without these guys’ support, and of course Badminton England who have been there and supported us for the last 15 years of our career. So it’s a big thanks to all these people when we get results like this.”
The title continues a strong run of form for the pair, who have steadily built momentum on the international stage.
“I feel like it’s been a long time coming. We’ve had a really good level for a long time. It’s just been difficult for us to put it all together at certain times, and I think we’re mature men now and it seems like it’s all coming together a bit more.”
Their triumph came against high-quality opposition, including the defending champions, yet the pair remained grounded in their approach.
“I think it doesn’t matter who you come up against, you prepare the same way. I’ve got massive respect for the boys. Playing two events, both of them, every tournament they go to, their dad does an amazing job with both of them. To have both of them on the world tour and competing how they are, it’s a big credit to their family and what they do.”
Now European champions, Lane and Vendy are already looking ahead, their ambitions firmly set on even greater stages.
“We’re always hungry for more. I think I could probably stand here all day to tell you what our goals are, but just know that we want to stand on top of the biggest podiums in the world. Standing on top of the European Championships podium really gives us confidence that we can go to the next biggest podium and stand on top of that one.”
Their victory in Spain not only marks a personal milestone, but also signals a resurgence in English men’s doubles on the continental stage. Alongside Kirsty Gilmour’s singles triumph, it represents a proud and patriotic moment for British badminton, one built on dedication, teamwork, and belief.
