So far this Spring, British athletes have once again delivered a remarkable run of international success, claiming titles and medals across badminton, weightlifting, cycling, curling, and marathon running in a patriotic display of national pride and sporting excellence.
Here is a round-up of Team GB’s standout moments from April.
Glory at the European Badminton Championships
Britain enjoyed an outstanding European Badminton Championships in Huelva, Spain, with athletes from across the United Kingdom bringing home a string of medals.
Scotland’s three-time Olympian Kirsty Gilmour captured gold in the women’s singles, defeating Denmark’s top seed Line Kjaersfeldt in straight sets in the final. The 32-year-old had earlier overcome second seed Line Christophersen in a thrilling quarter-final encounter.
England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy, both Team GB Olympians, also struck gold after a commanding victory over French brothers Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov in the men’s doubles final.
Alex Green and Zach Russ secured bronze, while Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen claimed silver in the mixed doubles competition.
British strength on show in weightlifting
Team GB’s weightlifters continued their dominance at the European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi, Georgia, with Emily Campbell and Sarah Davies both defending their continental titles.
Two-time Olympic medallist Emily Campbell produced another extraordinary performance, lifting a European record total of 276kg across the snatch and clean & jerk to edge Norway’s Solfrid Koanda by a single kilogram in the women’s 86kg+ category.
The Nottingham-born star has now won six successive European titles since 2021, underlining Britain’s growing strength in the sport.
Sarah Davies also struck gold in the 63kg category with a total lift of 219kg, finishing ahead of Alina Shchapanava and Dziyana Maiseyevich.
London 2012 bronze medallist Madias Nzesso added another podium finish for Britain with bronze in the women’s 86kg competition.
Cycling stars dominate in Hong Kong
Great Britain’s cyclists enjoyed another medal rush at the Track World Cup in Hong Kong, finishing with an impressive haul of nine medals.
Matt Richardson led the way with two gold medals, storming to victory in the men’s sprint before anchoring Britain’s men’s team sprint triumph alongside Joe Truman and Harry Ledingham-Horn.
Olympic star Emma Finucane continued her rise with a dominant display in the women’s sprint to secure gold. She also added bronze in the women’s keirin and silver in the women’s team sprint.
Further silver medals arrived in the women’s team pursuit and women’s madison, while Britain also collected bronze in the men’s omnium and men’s madison.
Scottish curlers battle to world bronze
Scotland’s men delivered a determined performance to claim bronze at the World Curling Championships in Ogden, Utah.
Led by skip Ross Whyte, the Scots narrowly missed out on the final after surrendering a late lead in a hard-fought semi-final defeat to Canada.
However, Whyte, Robin Brydone, Craig Waddell, and Euan Kyle responded superbly in the bronze medal play-off against the United States. A decisive four-stone ninth end secured a memorable 11-6 victory over the hosts.
Marathon records fall in London
British distance runners also impressed at the London Marathon on a historic day in the capital.
Eilish McColgan finished seventh in the women’s race with a time of 2:24:51 in only the second marathon of her career, despite suffering with a blister midway through the race.
In the men’s event, Mahamed Mahamed finished tenth in 2:06:14 to become the second fastest British marathon runner in history, while Patrick Dever crossed the line just four seconds behind him.
The event also saw history made at the front of the field, with Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe and Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha both breaking the two-hour barrier for the marathon.
From badminton courts in Spain to cycling tracks in Hong Kong, Britain’s athletes are continuing to prove that the United Kingdom remains one of the world’s great sporting nations.
