London’s hero black cab drivers are offering to ride to the rescue of the NHS according to the London Cab Drivers Club chair Grant Davis.
However, Mr Davis said the government has so far ignored offers from black cab drivers in London to help ease the pressure on the NHS by using the vehicles as temporary ambulances.
London Cab Drivers Club chair Grant Davis told GB News the Government had ignored a similar offer during the Covid pandemic: “For years and years, black cabs in London have been called the fourth emergency service.
“Every taxi is wheelchair-accessible with hearing loops and grab handles. Disability is built into the DNA of the vehicle.
“When we had Covid, I personally used to write to the Government, Matt Hancock, and I said to him, ‘you’ve got thousands and thousands of licenced black cabs not working.’ You’re telling us the NHS is overwhelmed. People need to come to a hospital – use us, arrange contracts with taxi drivers. There you go.’”
In an interview with Patrick Christys, he said: “Taxi drivers can bring in passengers to and from hospital. We are here, we are willing and able.
“In London, there’s a thing called the Taxi Card that local authorities have for getting the elderly and the aged around to hospital appointments, to doctors, shopping.
“It’s a subsidised journey and the biggest contract in London is currently held by Computer Cab, which is a black cab radio circuit. So, what I’m saying is black cabs for years and years have helped get the elderly and the disabled around London.
“If there is a big need for us to step up again, black cabs are sitting here waiting and ready.”
He added: “You’ve only got a look at Remembrance Sunday, doing the free shuttles for the older war veterans and disabled soldiers to get into the Cenotaph.
“We are here to help, if you need us – thank God Matt Hancock is out of government, that’s what I say – but if you need us, get in touch and we’ll get you out of this hole.”
