Set your alarm for 6pm, this is the deepest solar eclipse Britain has seen in a generation, and the next one like it is decades away.
Millions of Britons will look skyward this evening as the moon slides across the face of the sun, dimming daylight across the country in the most striking eclipse the UK has witnessed since 1999. Unlike last year’s much milder partial eclipse in March 2025, which blocked out only around a third of the sun, tonight’s event will hide up to nine-tenths of it in places, plunging early evening into an eerie, cloudy-day gloom.
Demand for protective eclipse glasses has been intense. Major retailers reported running out of stock by Tuesday afternoon, with queues forming outside shops overnight and crowds descending on the Royal Observatory Greenwich hoping to secure a pair. Predictably, resellers have been cashing in, flipping £10 glasses for as much as £100.
Will It Actually Go Dark?
Not fully, no. Because this is a partial eclipse rather than a total one, the sun is never completely blotted out anywhere in Britain, so the country won’t plunge into night-like blackness. What you should notice instead is a gradual dimming and a drop in temperature, similar to heavy cloud cover rolling in, most pronounced around the peak between 7pm and 7.16pm. Shadows will sharpen and take on an odd, slightly metallic quality, and colours may look muted. Streetlights on automatic sensors and some cars’ automatic headlights could switch on briefly, mistaking the dip in light for dusk.
Timing: A Nearly Two-Hour Show
The eclipse begins shortly after 6pm and runs for close to two hours. Edinburgh sees the moon start to bite into the sun first, at around 6.08pm, with the effect reaching Cornwall roughly ten minutes later. Maximum coverage arrives about an hour after that, close to 7.05pm in Edinburgh, 7.10pm in Manchester, 7.12pm in London, and 7.16pm in Cornwall. By around 8.10pm, the moon will have moved clear and normal daylight will return.
Best Places to Watch
Coverage isn’t uniform across the country: the further southwest you are, the more dramatic the view. The southwestern tip of Ireland gets the best vantage point in these islands, with nearly 98% of the sun obscured, while Cornwall and Pembrokeshire aren’t far behind at roughly 95% and 94%. Londoners can expect around 90% coverage. Wherever you’re watching from, high ground with a clear run to the horizon will serve best, since the sun will be low in the sky as the eclipse unfolds.
Elsewhere in Europe, Iceland and northern Spain lie within the path of totality, where the sun is completely blotted out, while France, Belgium, Switzerland and northern Italy will see coverage in the high 80s to mid-90s percentage range.
For those wanting a fuller spectacle, Spain is the destination of choice this year, with an estimated 1.5 million visitors expected to flood into the country to stand in the path of totality, which sweeps across 13 of its 17 regions. Menorca, Valencia, Segovia and Bilbao are shaping up as prime viewing spots, with totality there around 8.26–8.33pm local time and hundreds of official viewing sites laid on by regional authorities. Southwest France also does well, with Toulouse nearing 98% coverage compared with under 90% in Strasbourg to the east; Paris will see roughly 93%, with a public viewing event planned in the Parc André Citroën.
Public Events
Several organisations are opening their doors for group viewings. The Royal Observatory Greenwich starts its session at 4pm, with astronomers on hand and a live stream for anyone who can’t attend in person. The Observatory Science Centre in Sussex opens at 5pm with glasses and solar telescopes available (tickets required), and Keele University is offering a similar setup on campus. The Eddington Astronomical Society is running a free, informal viewing with complimentary glasses and telescopes.
Weather Watch
Forecasters are largely optimistic. Much of England and Wales look set for clear skies this evening, which is good news for the southwest in particular, where the deepest coverage coincides with what should be excellent visibility. Scotland and Northern Ireland face a somewhat higher chance of cloud, especially along western coasts, though skies over southern Scotland could still clear in time.
A Word for Drivers
Timing is awkward for motorists: the peak of the eclipse falls right at the tail end of the evening rush hour, so plenty of people will be behind the wheel just as the sky dims and everyone else’s attention drifts skyward. Motoring experts are urging drivers to resist the temptation to glance up, since even brief eye contact with the sun is harmful, and a moment’s distraction is dangerous at speed.
Eclipse glasses should never be worn while driving, as they block far too much light to see the road safely, and drivers should avoid trying to film or photograph the event from behind the wheel. If you want to watch, pull off the road properly into a car park or safe verge, well clear of the carriageway, and switch your headlights on manually rather than trusting automatic sensors, which may lag or behave oddly as light levels swing. Be alert, too, for pedestrians who may be walking with their eyes on the sky rather than the pavement or road ahead.
What About Pets and Wildlife?
Dogs and cats generally take an eclipse in their stride, and evidence from past events suggests most household pets show little obvious reaction, particularly to a partial eclipse like tonight’s where the sky never goes fully dark. That said, animals already prone to anxiety, especially around thunderstorms or fireworks, may pace, whine, pant or try to hide as the light fades and temperature dips, since the change can be mistaken for the onset of evening. The advice from vets is much the same as for a storm: keep to your normal routine, don’t force a nervous pet to interact, and offer a treat or some calm company if they seem unsettled.
Birds tend to be more sensitive to light cues than cats and dogs. Wild birds often fall quiet in the run-up to the darkest point, head back to roost as though dusk has arrived, and pick up their singing again once the sun re-emerges. Pet birds left out of their cage may do much the same, going still and heading for their perch. Other wildlife has been known to respond to the false dusk too, with nocturnal creatures stirring early and bees returning to the hive, though how noticeable any of this is tonight will depend on how sharply the light actually drops in your area.
Eye Safety Comes First
Astronomers are repeating one message above all others: never look directly at the sun, even when it’s almost entirely covered. As the sky darkens, your pupils widen to let in more light, which means more harmful UV radiation reaching the retina if you look up unprotected, risking lasting damage to your eyesight.
Proper eclipse glasses, typically only a few pounds, remain the safest bet, though stock has largely dried up. A homemade pinhole projector is a solid low-cost alternative: punch a small hole in a piece of card, hold it up so sunlight passes through onto a second sheet of paper behind it, and you’ll see a small projected image of the eclipse. Kitchen colanders work on the same principle, stand with your back to the sun and let light fall through the holes to project multiple crescent images onto the ground.
If you do get hold of glasses, check they carry the ISO 12312-2 safety certification. Ordinary sunglasses don’t cut it, and old eclipse glasses kept from 1999 shouldn’t be trusted either, as their filters degrade over time. NASA has also cautioned against pointing phone cameras at the sun, warning it can damage the sensor.
Because tonight’s event is a partial eclipse rather than a total one, the sun will never be fully blocked out from anywhere in the UK, meaning glasses need to stay on for the entire duration, not just at the peak.
With a rare astronomical spectacle, largely cooperative weather, and the next comparable event not due in Britain until 2090, tonight offers a genuine once-in-a-lifetime moment to look up, safely.
