New National Satellite Calibration Facility to Strengthen UK’s Earth Observation Sector

A state-of-the-art facility designed to elevate the UK’s burgeoning Earth observation sector has officially opened its doors, providing cutting-edge resources and expertise to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups.

The Small Satellite Calibration Facility, established through a collaboration between the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) RAL Space and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), represents a significant step forward for the UK’s space industry.

Empowering Innovation in ‘New Space’

The rise of “new space” has seen a growing number of innovative start-ups and SMEs developing small satellite instruments for Earth observation. These compact satellites are instrumental in gathering data to address pressing global issues, including climate change. However, the development of reliable sensors for these missions requires precise calibration—a process that can pose significant financial and technical challenges for smaller organisations.

While major satellite missions often allocate substantial resources to bespoke calibration solutions, such investment is typically out of reach for emerging space companies. The Small Satellite Calibration Facility offers a game-changing alternative, granting access to world-leading calibration services at reduced costs and with greater flexibility.

Strategically Positioned at Harwell Campus

Situated within RAL Space’s facilities at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire—a hub for over 100 leading space organisations—the new facility is set to become a cornerstone of the UK’s space infrastructure. It will provide companies with access to advanced calibration services, ensuring their instruments deliver high-quality data that enhances mission reliability and competitiveness.

Dr Dan Peters, STFC RAL Space Technical Lead for the facility, emphasised the importance of the initiative:
“Ensuring these instruments are calibrated effectively means we can be confident in the information they send back to us on Earth, helping us make better decisions about our planet.”

Boosting the UK’s Earth Observation Leadership

The Small Satellite Calibration Facility forms part of the UK Government’s £200 million Earth observation investment package, announced in 2022. This initiative underlines the Government’s commitment to fostering innovation in the space sector while addressing critical challenges such as climate change.

Christopher Baker, NPL Technical Lead for the facility, highlighted the collaboration’s significance:
“By working together on the SSCF, RAL Space and NPL combine our complementary expertise. This collaboration allows us to offer world-class calibration services to enhance data quality and mission reliability, lower barriers to entry for new space companies, and strengthen the UK’s position in the Earth observation sector.”
