Playground bully Carol Vorderman needs to stop picking on young conservatives, says Sophie Corcoran

Glorified playground bully Carol Vorderman has finally turned her attention from bullying MPs and their wives (Felicity Mercer in particular) to now targeting young conservatives.

Yep that’s right – the 62-year-old has now taken aim at young Tories – aged under 25. Most of whom are university students.

Earlier this week the former Countdown presenter said young conservative voters must feel “shame” and “vote in secret” as she slammed the Conservative Party once again.

Ms Vorderman’s rant towards young conservatives was in response to MP for Workington, Mark Jenkinson who had promoted the Cumbria Young Conservatives on his X page.

Carol Vorderman tweeted: “Can you imagine the shame nowadays of any young person saying they belong to the Corrupt Conservative Party? Polls show only 1% of age 18-24 would even vote for you….and even then they’d probably do it in secret.”

First of all Carol I’m under 25, female AND conservative, and I’m very proud of that.

Ms Vorderman has spent her life reading numbers on Countdown after her University of Cambridge education, sends her son to an expensive private school and has a reported net worth of around £18 million. She has got absolutely nothing in common with the regular folk of this country.

But in her sad attempts to shame young people wanting to get involved in politics, she fails to realise the reason WHY so few young people openly claim to be conservative.

It isn’t because there aren’t young people who have conservative views. There are many of us! It’s because young people are often too scared to be openly conservative, largely because of playground bullies like Carol… and who can blame them?

Throughout my time in politics and being openly conservative, I have received death threats, online threats of violence and have even been harassed in the street and at uni. I have received an unthinkable amount of abuse and am told I’ll never get a job. All things young people understandably don’t want to have to face just because of their political views.

So young people aren’t conservative because they don’t like the policies. Many times they’re not conservative because they are threatened by the abuse and hatred whipped up by irresponsible people in prominent positions like Carol Vorderman.

It is not young conservatives like me that should be ashamed of being conservative. It’s people like Carol and the media publications that continue to promote her. They are encouraging hate and abuse towards young people who wish to get politically involved. They’re the ones who should really be ashamed.
