More military veterans who played a crucial role in helping Britain and the United States establish the nuclear bomb are set to receive a commemorative medal, the government has announced.
In a significant expansion of the eligibility criteria for the Nuclear Test Medal, veterans who supported the United States’ atmospheric nuclear test programme during the 1950s will now be recognised for their invaluable contributions.
The first medal under the newly expanded eligibility was awarded yesterday by Veterans Minister Al Carns to Squadron Leader Peters. The ceremony took place at Peters’ home in Lakenheath, Suffolk, acknowledging his efforts during the 1954 American tests. As an RAF Canberra pilot, Peters undertook high-altitude air sampling missions to gather crucial data, contributing to both British and American nuclear developments. He had previously been honoured with the Air Force Cross for his distinguished service.
‘Recognition for Decades of Service’
The changes, which have been officially approved by His Majesty The King, mean that for the first time, those who directly participated in the American atmospheric nuclear tests are now eligible to receive the Nuclear Test Medal.
The commemorative Nuclear Test Medal was first announced nearly two years ago to honour those UK and allied personnel who played a direct role in the development of Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent during the atmospheric testing era of the 1950s.
To date, nearly 5,000 veterans and their next of kin have been awarded this prestigious medal.
The Ministry of Defence is urging any veterans, including civilian staff or their descendants who were involved in American tests, to apply for their medal.
